Kaarto.
Do you know when they emigrated to America? Can you find a record of their emigration? |

That will be tomorrow if not anyone can assist you, its almost half an hour passed midnight in Norway, time to get some rest.
Einar found his older brother Ole Christian born 1834. Here is Ole Kristian Olsen on Bakken in 1901, widower, farmer and Carpenter, his oldest daugter Kristine is a tailor, five daughters and one son. Gunda born 1886 works as an assistent in a shop, the rest of the children works on the farm. Karl Arnesen Klep lives on the farm, he is building boats.

Sina? No, the child you link to died BEFORE the 1865 Norwegian census was taken. The child appears to have lived on one of the Morretraa farms in Landvik -- see the column for place of residence. |

Hi, the Testing Forum worked well. Gunder Olsen Bakken and Johanne Thorsdr. emigrated on April 28. 1874 with following children: Christine, Ole Teodor, Thor Olaus and Sina, right hand #4-9
This "new" Sina was born June 7. 1873
They left on SS St. Olaf, dep. port Oslo via Arendal, Kristiansand and Hamburg in Germany, place of living Grimstad, on April 25, dest. Manitowoc W. Question: Could Severine Aanens datter age 25 travelig with them be Johanne Thorsdatter´s cousin, her father was Thor Aanensen, did he have a brother Aanen, and was Terje Olsen age 31, dest N.Y. a younger brother of Gunder Olsen Bakken?
Some information and a picture of SS St. Olaf
Landvik church in Hommedal in Grimstad municipality build 1824.

Hi Kaarto. Thank you so much for that.
It is interesting that in the Digitalarkivet that they spell the oldest daugther's name "Christine"....but when I looked at the parish records of the emigration, and of her birth, it is clearly spelled "Kirstine"
Yet again, in our family records the name is spelled Christine.
With regards to your questions, I don't know enough about the family yet but I think you are on to something there. I am going to be tracking down some obituaries as I have found they have worked the best for me to identify immediate family members.

I thought it was also interesting that Ole Teodor Bakken was born in 1867. They emigrated in 1874....so that means somebody must have gone back into the parish register to mark America well after the birth.....
Have you or anybody else on the board run into this before? |

Hi Erik, I think "America" was noted in Ole Teodors bitrh record by the priest when Confirmation time was "ready" for him, I have seen this some times before, even the date of the emigration and destination in USA, but this is rather unusual.
I understand having all these new names in a day or two, it will take you some time to sort it out.
Yes, Christmas 1868 was a sad time for the Bakken family, but a new Stina was born about 5 years later.

Hi Kare. I understand that Confirmation took place at around 15-16 years old?
At the time of Ole Teodore's emigration he would have only been 7 years old.
I agree it is strange that the Priest would have gone back into the Parish books and mark America under his birth record.
It doesn't look like they did it for any of his siblings..... |

Ragnild Thorsdatter Grinnevold had a namesake, she emigrated 1844
Rĝyneland spelled Rĝnneland in 1670 and 1723 is coming from Rĝyne/Rogn - Mountain ash.

That is interesting. My father has told me that the Bordsen's were neighbors of the Bakkens in Evansvill, MN.
I think we are related to the Bordsens.......
In a family document that I have, I read some of the following:
Ragnhild g.m. Berulo Borsdon Theodor Bordson, g.m. Marie Staken? I can now read "Aaken" Reinert Bordson g.m. Matea? Stalland

It´s a small wold. Ragnild Thorsdatter Grinnevold born June 18. 1819, right hand #13 married to Berul Baardsen Birkaas on Norways Nationale day, May 17. 1844, left hand #5, both emigrated in1844, she was an older sister of Johanne Thorsdatter married to Gunder Olsen Bakken.
Christine and Kristine are both common names in Norway.
