Great-grandmother Kari Gilbertson Born 1832, Great-grandfather Johann (John) Brenden (Johnson). Johan was born in 1824 and died in 1874 of pneumonia, just before family was going to leave for the United States. Last name Brenden, was changed to Johnson in the US. Kari and Johann had 10 children. area was Hadeland (??) in Norway.
Any information would be great - seem to have hit a brick wall!
Thank you

From what you have described, this family should be easy to find in the 1865 census. So far, no luck on this end. What year did Kari emigrate, and did she have 10 children with her? Brenden could be a farm name, which is common to several fylkes, or counties. If you have found them in the US census, the immigration year should be available.

Hadeland is an area in Oppland, Norway. An ancient area which includes the clerical/political districts known as Gran, Jevnaker, and Lunner.

Gilbertson is NOT a Norwegian name but quite a few persons with "similar" Norwegian names adopted that name after they emigrated.

Kari and her children left from Gran, Oppland on or about 14 Jun 1875. They list their previous residence as the farm "Østenbrænden".
You'll be able to get detailed birthdates from the following database of people leaving the parish of Gran.

The death record for Johan Johnsen, looks like 29 May 1874, and his birth date could be 16 Oct. 1825.#79

This could be Johans birth record, born 27 Oct 1825. Parents are John Andersen and Anne Johnsdatter(I think that is her last name):#122
The marriage record Einar(posted below) found indicated Johans father was John Andersen.

HOW EXCITING!!!
Thank you all so much for the information on my family! My mother is going to be so pleased! Grandma's mom and dad passed away when grandma (my mom's mom) was only 6 years old. She was raised by an aunt and uncle. Her father was Kari & Johann's son, Anders (grandma said his name was Andrew John). I would have never found the information on my own with all of the name changes! THANK YOU AGAIN! You are all AMAZING!
