My g-great-grandmother arrived at Ellis Island on the SS Island in Nov 1902 from Christiana with her young daughter, Sigrid, to join her husband, Marius in Minneapolis. He had come over in 1901 or early '02, but I can find no record of him. In census' his name is Morrie, Mamie and Marius. And his last name varies as Mathson, Mathieson or Mathisen. Any ideas? |

The emigration record for Agnes and Sigrid will hopefully give more information.
16 Oct 1902
Without know how old Marius should be at the time of his leaving Norway it can be difficult to know if the record is found... but try this - 30 May 1902

According to the baptized records of Sigrid Marie Mathisen, #254 her farther Marius Mathisen was an “Maskinmester” engineer so it is probably him arriving New York June 16 1902.
They lived at Ullensagergaden 2, Kampen, Oslo in Oct 1901.

Marius and Agnes married Aug 6 1901, see #148 his father was Kristian Mathisen and her father was Andreas Sigurdsen. In 1900 Marius, his mother and siblings are here Agnes is not in the 1900 census for Oslo, but her father must be recorded as Andreas Siguls. he was living at the same adress as the one recorded for Agnes wedding (Ullensakergaden 2). Agnes was confirmed in Sem church, Vestfold Oct 6 1895, see #38 the parents is Andreas Sigurdsen and Inger Olea Olavesdatter. It is noted that she was born in Oslo parish, Kristiania April 15 1881 and baptized Aug 28 1881. The baptismal record is #112 the parents were living at St Halvardsgate 47 and the father was born 1842.

Agnes mother Inger Olea was a child born out of wedlock, see #33 she was born June 11 1841 and her mother was Ingeborg Nielsdatter and the father was Olavus Simonsen. The following information was given in the baptismal record: "Berthe Maria Andersdatter who were married to shoemaker Niels Jonasen in Tønsberg informed about the child birth. The childs mother was 30 years old. The father was 24 years old and had come to Tønsberg from Stokke parish and was working for the widow Elen Thorsen in Tønsberg." Olavus was born Febr 25 1817, see #23 his parents were Simon Olsen and Christine Olsdatter at Bakken under Stokke. Simon and Christine were married Aug 14 1815, see 3rd record from top, right hand page here Simon came from Anebo parish.

From Agnes and Marius wedding record we see that Marius father was "bryggeriarbeider" (brewery worker) - in 1865 he must be 15992 living at Rødfylgaden and was 28 years old born in Aker.

Thank you to all who have provided information. I am deeply grateful and I apologize for not responding earlier; I never was notified of any replies to my query (probably because I did not properly subscribe) and I neglected to check back until now.
I have one more question: in the ship's manifest for Marius (S.S. Cymric) his place of residence is listed as "Cassia." I have made a number of searches and cannot find it. Does anyone have an answer? I promise to check back often. |

Probably a poor abbreviation for Christiania (Oslo). Peering at the actual handwriting it appears more like "C.ania" |

Thank you very much, that makes sense. I wasn't the only one who read it as Cassia, so I will to pass this on.
Thanks for your generous assistance. |

"Simon Olsen and Christine Olsdatter at Bakken under Stokke."
Forgive my ignorance of my family roots in Norway, I am learning.
I can locate Bakken and Stokke, but what does "Bakken under Stokke" refer to?

Hi, Bakken under Stokke means Bakken was a sub farm under Stokke.
