I am trying to locate Jens Emanuel ,he left Norway from Kristiansand 19 mar 1886 and destination was Iowa. Jens Emanuel was born june 6 -1868 in Møskeland ,Lyngdal,Vest Agder in Norway- I found that Jens Emanuel left on march 20 in 1885 with ship Amerikalinjen, destination Iowa- suppose he has been home for a visit when he is found in emigration lists in 1886 in 1889 there is one Jens E Mørkedal leaving on april 13. This may be the same person ,because it says in the emigration papers that he has emigrated in 1885 and lives in Iowa-I belive that this name Mørkedal could be a misspell of Møskeland-the place where Jens Emanuel was born. My problem is that I am not able to locate him in USA--- |

The Jens Olsen leaving from Kristiansand 19 Mar 1886 appears to be travelling with possible relatives, Tobias Olsen and Regine Olsen from Lyngdal to Iowa. Did YOUR Jens Olsen have siblings by those names? |

Here is a younger brother to Jens, in the 1900 census. Abraham Kvelland Olsen and his wife Karen. He was born 20 March 1871 in Lyngdal. Looks like he is a citizen of the United States. Are you aware of Abraham? #4237
Here is an emigrtion record for Abraham, going to Iowa leaving 17 Feb. 1888. See # 13387

Yes I do know about Abraham. He went back to Lyngdal and in 1900 he is maried to Karen Tonette Pedersdatter. He went back to Usa,Washington,in 1904.His wife gave birth in may 1905 and died 4.june 1905 so I do suppose he was back in Lyngdal at that time.Abraham and Jens Emanuel had two sisters that emigrated. Family story says that they visited Lyngdal in 1903-1904- when they came back to Usa they both got sick and died shorly after, that might have been the reason Abraham went to Washington in 1904.quote: Originally posted by Lester Hanson

Just a hunch - Find someone who has access to Ancestry.com and ask them to check in Lyon County, Iowa. One or two Iowa state censuses before 1900 might give some clues. |

Actually I noticed a "Jans Olson" in Lyon Co. in 1900. But incomplete information was listed for the man in that census and I thought the Iowa State censuses might help. No, I have not seen the 1885 census for Story Co. Iowa. I do not subscribe to Ancestry.com. That is why I recommended contacting someone who does.

Some info for Jans Olson from the 1900 Iowa census.
Name: Jans Olson Home in 1900: Lyon, Lyon, Iowa Birthplace: Norway Relationship to head-of-house: Hired Man Race: White Occupation: View Image (Farmer) Immigration Year: 1885 (Lived in US 15 years, Naturalized) Household Members: Name Age Ben Chraft 31 Betsey Chraft 30 Clara Chraft 3 Melvin Chraft 1 Jans Olson (No birth month, year, or age given)
There is a Jens Olsen, married, living in Tacoma, Washington in the 1820 and 1930 census. His wifes name is Inga. Immigration year was given as 1888. First child was born about 1903 in Washington. Could this be your Jens Olsen? Above, not a good choice to list. Les

Might be the same Jans Olson, the one in 1885 and the one in 1900- this is a difficult one. I am thinking that since his brother Abraham went to Washington in 1904- may be Jens was living there at that time---and there are the two sisters as well- I will have to use my imagination and think of some way to locate them as well. May be they lived in the same aerea. The sisters are Anna Martine Olsen born 1865 and Amalia Cecilia Olsen born 1876 .Both arrived in Ny 25 july 1893. |
