Hello friends...

I need some help again.

Edvard Johansen was born 19 Jul 1853 in Jarfjord in Sor-Varanger, Finnmark, Norway.
He was son of Johannes Johannesen born 1822 in Finnmark and Anna Jakobsdatter 1824-1887.
When Edvard lived here in Norway his name was Edvard Johannesen, but I saw in emigrants sailing from Trondheim that he called himself Edvard Johansen.
When he emigrated his destination was Volda in Dakota.

I want to find him in America because I know all from his life here in Norway.
Did Edvard got married, did he have children and where did he settle?
Please help me!

Have a nice day
Mette in Hadeland,Norway

The emigration record from Trondheim lists him leaving for VOLGA (not Volda) Dakota in 1881. Volga is located in Brookings County, South Dakota.

The next US federal census would be in 1900, but you'd need to check if South Dakota area did any local census between 1881 and 1900.

Hi Mette,

Actually the next Federal census after 1881 in Dakota Territory occured in 1885. It was a special census taken to determine the viability of the territory & its residents to be self-supporting if they were granted statehood. The counties which eventually became North Dakota have been transcribed and are searchable at the Institute for Regional Studies web site:

http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndirs/index.html

The schedules containing most, not all, of the counties which became South Dakota have gone missing. Don't know about Brookings County in particular.

Since your best clue is Volga, South Dakota you might do better placing a query at the Brookings County site at:

Good Luck!

Mette,
I too have an Edvard Johansen, but his birthdate is 1857. He became Edward Hammer when he came to USA, so they often changed their names.
I am looking for more information about him. He died 23 Nov 1893, age 36, leaving his widow, Klara Marie, with 5 young children.

Your Edvard Johansen/Hammer came from Vinger area in Hedmark, Norway. In the 1865 Norwegian census he was living with his parents and siblings on a farm named Hammer.

Your Edvard Johannesen Hammer from Vinger in Hedmark was born May 6 1857 and christened June 21. The baptismal record is #225
His father Johannes Johansen was the owner of Hammer but came from Colbjørnsrud and was born at Johnsrud. He was a widower when he married Edvards mother Anne Marthea Embretsdatter on July 17 1856, see
#53
Since this is another Edvard (also Johannesen rather than Johansen) than Mette was working with, maybe you should start a new topic.
