I would be very interested to receive any information in connection with the following. Ship: Norwegian barque called the Emerald. Owned by J. Hesselburg (or Hesselberg) of Laurvig. Wrecked on November 12 1879 on Aikerness Holm Westray Orkney Scotland en route from New York to Gothenburg.
Captain Pedersen and all his crew survived.
I am in possession of the original deck cabin which was salvaged off the wreck and used as a dwelling house for the next 123 years. Any information regarding the above would be very much appreciated. |

The owner was probably Shipowner Hans Jørgen Hesselberg (b. 20 Apr 1810 - d. 16 Mar 1864), Gloppe, Tjølling (Larvik), Vestfold. His wife Anne Cathrine Stephansen is a widow on the Gloppe farm in the 1865-census.

The Bark Emerald belonged to M. Oppen & Co. shipping company in Larvik, and was build by Holens Verft (Holens shipbuilding yard in Larvik, Vestfold) in 1866.

Thank you very much for your speedy response to my post. I am delighted to receive this information, all of which is new to me. I never thought it would be possible to find a photograph of the Emerald!
I am incorporating the deck cabin of the Emerald into my newly built art gallery to house a heritage/museum display. All the information and artefacts I can piece together will be available for visitors to see. The details supplied by you will help greatly to build a worthwhile exhibit.
Many a time as I have stood in the cabin I have wished that the walls could speak and tell of the voyages and the places it has been. Now they are beginning to speak!!
Last year a document was found in Orkney Archives which gives a detailed account of the final voyage across the Atlantic and the horrendous weather which drove the Emerald aground, as told by Captain Pedersen himself.
Do you think it would be possible for me to get more information about the barque itself from the shipbuilders, maybe plans etc.?
Also, would it be possible to find out if there are descendants of the Captain and crew who might be interested to know of the whereabouts of the cabin and could even contribute some anecdotes regarding the incident?
Thank you again for taking the time to reply to my enquiry. |

Hi, I'm glad the info was useful.
With regards to the barque itself, try to contact the Larviks Sjømannsforening (Seamen's Union of Larvik) or Larvik Sjøfartsmuseum (Larvik Shipping Museum).

Would it be possible for me to obtain a high resolution scan of the Emerald as shown in an earlier post? I would be very keen to have a large picture of the ship displayed in the cabin. Any advice would be much appreciated. |

What info did Larviks Sjømannsforening or Larvik Sjøfartsmuseum provide for you?

I haven't had a reply from either of them yet. I contacted them at the time you forwarded the information to me. Maybe I should send a follow-up enquiry?
Thank you again |

I am an American descendant of the Norwegian Rød family which also owned a bark Emerald. It is listed on the Norway-Heritage website and I am wondering if the two could be one and the same. There was also an Ole Pedersen in the Rød family. Nonetheless, the chronologies for these ships as posted do vary. The one for the Emerald when captained by Brødrene Rød ends in 1875 when it was stranded off Kinn. I applaud your efforts for conserving this relic and am most curious as to what more you may have learned of it - Candace |
