I have a letter by Nils Ludvigsen Elevetun dated Madison, Wisconsin July 12, 1854. He tells his ship left Bergen May 1 and arrived in Quebec June 18. No ships listed as departing from Bergen that year fit these dates. They may of course be inaccurate.
My question, however, is: are the lists complete and are the dates reliable?
This emigrant was very dissatisfied with absolutely everything and he felt miserable. The census for 1865 has him back at Solvorn in Hafslo. |

We can't be sure the lists are complete. We have listed all ships which we know were involved in the conveyance of emigrants.
I only know of one ship from Bergen arriving at Quebec near the given date, and that was the Ocean mastered by Captain Sundt. It was reported to arrive June 17. I do not know when it departed Bergen, and I currently do not have access to the old Bergen newspapers, so I cant say if the departure date matches the dates from the letter or not. Maybe someone else could check it if they have access to the 1854 Bergen newspapers. |

Thank you. This is probably the ship, but I cannot find it listed, at least not for 1854. The letter in question complains about everything and the emigrant later returned to Norway. |

Orm, the reason why the ship is not listed is that we have not found any evidence that it was actually carrying emigrants yet. Obviously the information you have found urges us to seek more information about this matter. I will ask Trond Austheim if he can check the for a departure in the Bergen newspapers.
I have bought your books, except for volume II. They are a fantastic piece of work, thank you Orm! I wish we had the letters available and searchable on the web, would that be something that could happen in the future? |

There are no plans at the moment to make Fra Amerika til Norge available on the net. Volume five is about to be published and volumes six and seven will hopefulle appear in 2010 and 2011. I have completed the editing process.
As for the doubt whether all ships leaving Norway for Quebec carried emigrants, I believe that in this period they all did. They went to Quebec for one reason: to bring back timber to British ports and the only alternative to taking emigrants was to load up with more ballast.
By the early 1860s steam ships were becoming a viable alternative for emigrants and gradually emigrants ceased to go to North America by sail. I have written about this in my Johan Schrøder's Travels in Canada, 1863 (Montreal, 1989). |

I am off to the library to check out your books. Your name, Overland, is different than the typical Norwegian type such as names that indicate "by the river". "by the mountain" etc. Was "Overland" derived from overland?
Just a nosy question from a proud Norwegian with Valdres roots in Minnesota.

My name is actually Øverland but when I use English Overland is more convenient. It is a quite common name and means simply the upper or higher land. Similarly, the name Nærland or Nerland means the lower land. The name Øvrebø has roughly the same meaning as Øverland. These are all farm names. |
