It seems that in order to better understand my Norwegian family history, I need to know how they lived. Where do you suggest I go to learn this?

What about starting by reading some famous Norwegian novels?

There's a lot of Norwegian books and novels that describes the life e.g. in the 1800-century, both how it was on the countryside and in the cities.

E.g. this one; "Hunger" by Knut Hamsun (1859-1952).

The People at Innhaug by Anne Karin Elstad is a famous fiction novel, but I'm not sure if it is available in English...

Hi,

What an excellent idea!

I might recommend a good general non fictional look: Of Norwegian Ways by Bent Vanberg Dillon Press 1979.

Other books on my shelf are:

From Fjord to Prairie by Simon Johnson 1916
From Woods and Fields by Lars Opsata (translation by Edna Rude)1976 (Hallingdal area)
Njal's Saga (Penguin Classics) translated & introduced by Magnus Magnusson & Hermann Palsson 1974 (Viking age)
Kristin Lavransdatter (trilogy) by Sigrid Undset 1959 (medieval)

Most of these should be in American public libraries or available through inter library loan.

Good Luck

Jackie M.
