Where did the ship depart from? Bremen, Germany?
Unfortunately, all lists from 1875 - 1908 older than 3 years were destroyed due to lack of space in the Bremen Archives.
Ancestry.com.au has a record of 262 names arriving in Sydney, New South Wales on June 3rd, 1907 with the SS Kleist from Norddeutscher Lloyd. Source: New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922
The National Archives Uk have a record from Southampton: SS Kleist (Norddeutscher Lloyd) travelling from Sydney to Bremen. Embarking at Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Colombo, Sydney and Port Said. The record contains a list of passengers disembarking at Southampton on 29 Jul 1907. Source: nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Jan, Thanks for that info. I'm looking for my wife's grandfather (Andreas) Barth Thom HANSEN coming to Melbourne between 1900 (in Norway in the 1900 census) and 1913 when he married in Melbourne. I did find Andrea Hansen coming in on the SS Kleist as listed above and wondered if this may have been him. I do have no other information so any help appreciated. Alan, Perth Western Australia

Do you know when Andreas Thom (Thomas?) Barth Hansen was born?
The origin of Barth in Norway is coming from Daniel Barth born in Wissbach in Germany March 22. 1601. He came to Kongsberg in Norway about 1629 to work for king of Norway and Denmark, Christian 4. in the Silver main company as accountant. He ended as Director for Kongsbeg Sĝlvverk. He married in Kongsberg to Mette Schneberg on Nov. 20. 1631 and they got 12 children, oldest son Johannes born 1633 takes over as Director for Kongsberg Silver Mines in 1656 after the father. Daniel barth died March 3. 1656 and are buried at the cemetery at Kongsberg church. The speach held in the funeral shall be kept in the library at the University of Trondheim. Descendants after them lives all over Norway. Andreas Barth Hansen´s forefather should then be Hans Barth if the naming tradition was kept.
A road, Daniel Barths vei is named after him.

Hi, I do not know where the Barth name is from but it was carried over to his youngest son, my wife's uncle, Mervin Barth Thom Hansen. We do have a chart of direct lines back to the 1600's and no where in that is there a "Barth" name. Thanks for your thoughts. Alan. |
