Trying to trace my husbands roots- here's what we know:
Martha Olsdatter Rognstad (DOB-11/12/1881) born in Oppland, (Gran Parish) came over with her son Einar Orien Rognstad (DOB-1/30/1904) in 1908. Einar's father, we are- told is Andreas Amundsen born in 1877- he and Martha were not married. We know nothing about him, his family or where he is from. We would love to find some information on him and his life and family. We have found Martha and her family in the 1900 Census in Brandbu on the Rognstadengen farm. We would also love to find out some information on Martha's parents and brothers. It would be exciting to see how far back we could go, who else came over-and to where -and who of our family is still there in Norway.

Any information would be so greatly appreciated!!! We would be thrilled with anything!

Thank you so much for your time and effort fo us.

From the census in 1900 where you found Martha you will also see her parents Ole Amundsen who was a carpenter and farmer. He was born in 1841 and was the owner of Rognstadengen.
Marthas mother was Eline Olsdatter and was born in 1837.
Martha had two brothers in 1900, Edvart who was a timberman and Olaf who was a shoemaker prentice.
Martha (baptized Marta) was born Nov 12 1881 and bapt Jan 1 1882, see #4 in lower part of page (which is for females).
Her parents were then on Molstadeiet.
Marthas brother Olaf from the 1900 census was born March 23 1884 and baptized Olav Nikolai on April 13 (Easter sunday). The parents were still on Molstadeiet. See
#15
Marthas brother Edvart was born May 3 1878 and baptized Edvard on June 23, see #62

Ole Carstensen was baptized Febr 26 1792, see 3rd record on left page his parents were Carsten Larsen and Rangdi Olsdatter on Undelieeiet.
In 1801 was Ole 9 years old, his father however is wrongly recorded as Tosten Larsen 54 years old.

The record for Marthe and Einar Rognstad emigrating from Oslo 1908
No record for Einars baptism has been found in the Brandbu or Gran parishes. (His fathers name and dwelling would have been recorded if that record can be found.)
In the 1900 census no Andreas Amundsen has been found either.

I've seen him, but Einars birth record is needed to confirm who was the father. It might be that Einar never was baptized of course, and if so the father will be a ?

Wow, I'm amazed at how much you have found for me!!! Thank you so much. It's so exciting to see it all come together! Back in 2003, I got a reply from a lady at the Gran Kirken, she is the one who gave us Andreas Amundsens name. Saying also that the books have been given to the Statsarkivet i Hamar. I have found a few Andreas Amundsens in the 1900 census' born between 1876-1878. 1 on the Forsethhaugen nordre farm, 1 on the Hodneland farm, 1 on the Simenstuen farm and 1 on the Valde farm. There is also one in the military depot in Oslo but it gives no birth year. The lady at the Gran Kirken mentioned that at some time he lived in Kristiania. I'm curious as to wether any of these are him. I just don't know where to go from here.

I also have the last will and testament (in Norwegian) for Olaf Rognstadengen and his wife Karoline-this is Martha's brother. It makes me wonder what relatives we may have over there. I'm trying my best to see what I can translate from it. I don't know what farm he was living on when he died- but it was 11/23/1976.

Also, thank you for finding that Martha had a sister as well- we never knew that. I"ve wondered if Olaf was the only sibling that stayed in Norway, but now there may be Pauline as well.

Thank you for all your time you are spending on our behalf, we appreciate it.

Lynn

Btw; it looks like Marthe and Einar arrived New York on June 11th 1908, sailing on The Adriatic, leaving Southampton, England on June 3rd.
But I can't find them in the manifest. Its possible that some pages of the manifest are missing...

If you know whether Einar was baptized and possibly place (also place of birth) and date that would be nice.
Martha also had another brother Julius born Jan 3 1867, see #12
He obviously died because they had another Julius April 9 1868, see #88
A sister Oline was born Oct 22 1871, see #13
and another sister Anne born Dec 13 1872, see #11
and a sister Ragna was born Aug 6 1875, see #221

I can't believe that Martha had so many siblings! I have been trying to locate them in the 1875 census but have yet to fing them. I will keep looking! Einar's birthdate is 1/30/1904, but I am unsure of where he was born-guess I always assumed he was born where his mother lived. But really we have no clue.

Yes, but the ship S/S Oslo was a feeder ship that brought them to Hull, England. They did not cross the Atlantic with that ship.
The Adriatic has occasional calls at Boston before arriving NY, so that's probably why they're not listed at Ellis Island.
