I am looking for emigration information for the two people named above. They were both born in Norway and emigrated to America sometime after 1883 and before 1890. Two of their children, Hans & Alf, were born in Norway. Their great grandson would like to know exactly where they emigrated from in Norway.

Some birth years might help...
Census-1900 for Roberts, South Dakota shows:

Andrew Week, born 1850, imm 1884
Maren Week, born 1856, imm 1885
Hans Week, born 1880, imm 1885
Alf Week, born 1883, imm 1885

Thanks for your prompt reply. I did have the 1900 census from Roberts County. We know that Andrew & Maren first came to Meeker County in Minnesota before moving to Roberts County, SD. After coming to America, they had 3 more children, Christian, born January 1890, and Levis & Selma, twins, born on June 13, 1893. These children were born in Meeker County, Minnesota. Their great grandson is trying to find where they came from in Norway so I'm trying to find some naturalization or emigration records.

Hi,
have you located these people in later US-censuses?

Andrew would be Anders or Andreas in Norway. He is born around 1850, and probably on a farm called Vik. Maren, Hans & Alf would probably be named the same over here.

It would be nice to find his patronymic. Do you know if Andrew Week is listed anywhere with a middle initial?

Hi

If nothing else develops you might try Hans or Alf as the patronymic for either parent...

There are two Week entries in Nordmaendene:

Hans T. Week came from Vik, Stange, Hedemarken in 1869
was a Methodist minister and had a "call" at Sheyboygan Wisc. in 1908

Halvor T. Week came from Nordre Aurdal, Valders in 1855 to Bear Creek, Mower Co, Minnesota, later lived at Spring Valley, Minnesota; had a son named Jon who was a Sergeant in the Civil War.

Both the boys were prime time to be registered in US for service in WWI, if living at that time. There are three different standard forms and each ask slightly different questions but they usually ask date of birth and place of birth. If they were alive to be asked, were filling out the correct form, answered truthfully as they might list a place in Norway... WWI registration card database is on ancestry.com

Also there is this database mentioning Hans A. Week and Christian A. Week, not a lot of detail but fairly recently updated so still active...

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=marshallcounty&recno=44179

Minnesota naturalizations available here include at least 2 entries for Andrew Week both in Traverse County which is near northeast South Dakota.

http://www.ironrangeresearchcenter.org/aboutus/

There are some small details in the 1900 census which could be helpful. Each person's birthdate is recorded as a month and a year, that could help in the Norwegian records search and there are also questions asked as to the person's citizenship status whether or not the person is Al (alien), Pa(papers filed) Na(naturalized citizen).

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Fyi, Leve Stianson from Luffman, Marshall, SD is Liv Stiansen, born 21 JUL 1888 in Drangedal, Telemark by parents Peder Stiansen Vaje born 30 SEP 1860 & Mari Andrea Jørgensdatter Birkholt born 16 JAN 1855. The family emigrated from Oslo on June 23rd, 1893.

Often people from one area of Norway emigrated to the same area in the US.
So could the Week family come from Telemark ?
There is a Wiik farm in the 1865-census for Drangedal, but noone which looks like Andrew born around 1850 lives there...

We know that Andrew (Anders) and his wife settled in Meeker County, Minnesota, for several years before moving to Roberts County, SD. They acquired land when the Sioux Reservation opened up so moved from Minnesota to South Dakota. I cannot find a middle initial for Andrew on any of the census records nor his death record in South Dakota. I've contacted the Norwegian Consulate in Minneapolis but haven't received a reply from them as yet. I'll keep searching.

Hi,

Is there any known relationship between Andrew Week and Hoaken H. Week?

In the 1885 Minnesota State Census for Meeker County at Cedar Mills,
Hoaken H. Week age 30 b. Norway
Augusta J. Week age 32 b. Norway
Alfred Week age 4 b. Norway
John A. Week age 2 b. Minnesota
Ella S. Week age 1 b. Minnesota
Bernhard Michelson age 19 b. Norway

Rather curious that they have the same last name as Andrew and arrived about the same time & lived in the same place.

In the 1895 Meeker County, Cedar Mills census the family is thusly:
HH Week 49 b. Norway
Ingeborg 53 b. Norway
Hans A. 14 b. Norway
Elen(?) S. 11 b. Minnesota
Helga A. 8 (?) b. Minnesota

And from the Minnesota Death online index:
WEEK, HANS ALFRED
Date of Birth: 10 Apr 1881
Place of Birth: OUT OF STATE
Mother Maiden Name: (UNKNOWN)
certid# 1970-MN-023410
Date of Death: 25 Sep 1970
County of Death: MEEKER

Dalbydata.com has Hoken Week 1855-1925 & Ingeborg Week and H. Alfred Week each buried at a church cem named First Lutheran. (It is actually First Lutheran in Cosmos Township, Meeker County, Minnesota)
This may be Hoken's death index entry--it's the only one of the last name Week in 1925:

WEEK, HOAGLAND
Date of Birth: na
Place of Birth: na
Mother Maiden Name: na
certid# 1925-MN-007509
Date of Death: 13 Dec 1925
County of Death: MCLEOD

So it looks like Andrew's family and Hoken's family each had a Hans.

I will talk to the family about the possibility of Andrew and Maren having a connection to this week. As you said, it's rather a coincidence that both families arrived in Meeker County at about the same time. Thanks for the info. Pat Nitz

Hi Pat,

If all works out here is the address for a family in the 1865 census of Norway which has both an Andreas Hanson (ae 16) and a Haagen Hanson (ae 9). The farm is Vigen in Eker (Nedre Eker), Buskerud fylke. This might be worth exploring as to origin for your Week family...

This is very encouraging.. a marriage between a Hans Andreas Hanson and Maren G----- in Nedre Eker on 22 Jan 1880, #1.

Hmmm... interesting!
It reads: Maren Gurine Tollefsdr, born 1855 in Jarlsberg. Father Tollef Olsen.

Looks like this one:
Maren Gurine Tollefsdr
Birth: 17 OCT 1855
Christening: 04 NOV 1855, Skoger, Vestfold
Parents: Tollef Olsen & Christiane Torgersdr

Census-1865

This information looks very promising. I've contacted the Norwegian Consulate in Minneapolis and they have replied that they are looking for the emigration records for this family. Hopefully that information may verify what you've found. I'll also keep checking records. Thanks for all of your help Jackie & Jan Peter. Pat Nitz

I appears that this is Mr. Week's family from Norway. He'll be very happy to learn about this. The children's names are the names we already had on file here. Thanks. Pat Nitz
