quote: I think Martha was living at a place called Overby and that this was a home for people who didn't have much money?
I am not questioning your info, but there are several farm by the name Øverby in Vardal. In 1865 Marta was living with her parents and siblings at the farm Brustuen When Marte was confirmed in 1868 the family was living at Aamodteie.

Thank you to all who helped me find information on my family and for translating the Norwegian words to English for me, which I never could have done myself.
Ole Kristian, brother to Hans Peter was born July 22, 1840 so it looks like it could be him on the ship Cameo in 1881. He was 40 years old and went to Barnesville, Minnesota and maybe is it Albert Lea? I don't know what Betalt is though. Also maybe Martha and the children's records are not online yet as Dalb mentioned. If Ole's fare was prepaid does that mean he had a sponsor in the United States or that he could have paid for the fare himself? As far as a farm or place called Overby, I had learned it during my prior searches a few years back that possibly Martha, my great-grandmother lived there with her two first born children before she married Hans Peter. This house or building was still standing in maybe the early 1950's but now is gone. Finding out about my ancestors is very interesting for me and I have many unanswered questions in trying to put together this fascinating puzzle in my life. |

M. A. Lea is the shipping line - note the column titles in the line above the data for Ole - Click on the link to see the original entry page.
Betalt = prepaid The fare was most likely paid for by someone in America. It could have been a sponsor or a relative. If he had paid the fare in Norway, the amount would have been listed.
a dictionary to help you with translations - http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm
For Martha and the children, you could check the incoming records to see if they are listed. This would give you dates to check on their departure from Norway.. |
