Digitalarkivet shows in Emigranter fra Kristiansand 1873-1930 that Johannes Olsen Fristad departed Kristiansand in 1882, (blank month, might be June?) 18th Day
The information is copied below: 3982 Kristiansand 1221 1882 ?? 18 Johannes Olsen Fristad m U Utjent Militær 1859 23 Søndfjord
Can someone help me with the following: 1) Discover what the ship was he left on? None of the surrounding individuals in the list show the ship they left on. The individual's destination was the United States (eventually Missouri). 2) What does "Utjent Militær" translate to? 3) Are there any Military Schools near Kristiansand?
Any further help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Johannes Olsen Fristad left Christiansand on June 18th 1882 on the ship Geiser, which was headed directly for New York after leaving Christiansand. It had started in Christiania a few days earlier. Geiser arrived New York on July 3rd, 1882 with 415 passengers. Among them one Johan Hreesen (22)... could he be Johannes Olsen Fristad? Source: New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
2) "Utjent Militær" is a bit tricky... he has either served or not served the Norwegian army. Directly translated it means he has not served in the army. But the word "Utjent" is rarely used in that sentence... normally you would say "Uttjent", which means he has finished the initial military service, mandatory for all young men.
3) Yes. Gimlemoen. Opened 1863. Closed 1996.

Thanks for the response. Your information helps greatly. Here is what I have gathered that fits with your information.
1) - I will double check the passenger list. Would this be "Castle Garden" in New York? Is there a reference for the ship?
2) - Likely he completed the mandatory military service. I know he returned to Norway in 1884 and eventually became the Police Chief of Bergen, and supposedly his resume listed a military college
3) - The school you mentioned might be the place he matriculated from. Family "lore" says he graduated from a military university. Are there any available (search-able) records for this institution?
Thanks again. |

Hi, the passenger list is available here. (A subscription is needed to view the images... - I don't have that). You should go through the list to see who fits with your Johannes Olsen Fristad. I'm 100% sure he must be there.
Gimlemoen was more like a military camp, rather than a military school, but some sort of education would possibly be available there. Not sure actually...

Jonathan,
Do you need additional information for Johannes?
If his parents were Ole Johanessen and Pernelle Berntsdtr, here is their marriage record. 3 January 1859
And here is Johannes' birth record: 2 April 1859

Thanks Les, I am lucky enough to have discovered that info. I've found quite a bit of info in my search. It's logged at the following page:
http://history.fristad.net/fristad/fris_johannes.shtml
A the moment I am tracking his movements from Norway to Missouri, and his time at the military/police academy. Perhaps you might see something else I am missing. Thanks! |
