I am looking for information about my great uncle (Lars Sivertsen Austad). He left the Røra, Nord-Trondelag area in 1906. Arrived in the US via port Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on 24 Apr 1906. He emigrated to the US from St John, Canada, on the Canadian Pacific Railway, and seemed to have settled in Seattle, Washington. He applied for US citizenship on 2 Nov 1908, in Seattle. Then, on 9 Sep 1918, he rescinded his Declaration, saying that he expected to return to Norway, however the family never heard from him again. It is not certain that he did return to Norway.
He was to inherit the family farm, but because he had disappeared, a younger son farmed the land.
I cannot find him in US censuses - I have only his Declaration of Intention.
Can anyone help?
Thank you very much!

I completely forgot to add that Lars is the son of Sivert Nordberg Austad & Hanna Hansdatter. He was born on 13 Oct. 1881. He was one of 7 children, the others being Ragna (29 Nov 1878), Ingeborg Anna (28 May 1883), Hansine (27 Aug 1885), Julie (8 Oct 1887), Signe (12 Feb 1890) and Håkon (1 Jun 1892). Thank you!

Hi Lucia,

You may want to look at the 1910 census for Lewis Austad who was living in King County, Washington. Since you have Ancestry or access to Ancestry you could look there (the Washington State Secretary of State website also has this one!) Lewis is often swapped in America for Lars. I think you'll find this gent will be close to the "right" fellow, agewise, immigration date etc.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. Except for the age difference, everything else matches. The enumerators were notorious for mistakes.... I had always thought that "Lars" would translate into "Larry"; I had discarded "Lewis" in my searches.
Anyway, I do appreciate your efforts!
Sure wish I could find him after 1919, when he expressed the desire to return to Norway!
Lucia
