Åse Larsdatter Kjær and Christian Johannesen Bratsbergkleven
A friend’s relative in Norway, is trying to find out what happened to family members that immigrated to the U.S. in 1856. The family never heard from them again and would like to find out where they settled in the U.S. and if there are any family members that they could get in touch with.
They are looking for Åse Larsdatter Kjær, born 16 Feb. 1816, in Gjerpen, Telemark, Norway. She was the daughter of Lars Tygesen Kjær and Maren Fredricksen Kia?. She married Christian Johannesen Bratsbergkleven in Gjerpen on 27 January, 1856. They left Gjerpen on 21 April, 1856 for Amerika. Christian’s father was Johannes Iversen, from Christiania.
Here are the sources that I found. Birth record for Åse. #46, right hand side of the page. Source information: Telemark county, Gjerpen, Parish register (official) nr. 4 (1814-1823), Birth and baptism records 1816, page 19. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1364&idx_id=1364&uid=ny&idx_side=-22 Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20051011010022.jpg
Marriage record for Åse and Christian. #3 on the left. Source information: Telemark county, Gjerpen, Parish register (official) nr. 7B (1834-1857), Marriage records 1856, page 286. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7797&idx_id=7797&uid=ny&idx_side=-55 Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20061128090290.jpg
Record of them leaving Gjerpen. #61 and 62. Notice that there is another person leaving on the same day, from the Bratsbergkleven farm.

Also, Åse Larsdatters half-sister Maren, settled in Iola, Waupaca County, Wisconsin with her husband Lars Gordon. That family never had any contact with Åse and Christian either, so is also interested in finding information on them.
If anyone can help with finding immigration records, ship lists and where they settled, I’d greatly appreciate it. I was thinking that the Sjofna, which sailed from Porgrunn on 25 April, 1856 and arrived in Quebec on 18 June, 1856, might be a likely choice. Kåre, suggested the same ship, but I haven’t seen any ship lists for the Sjofna.
Thanks for your help! Wanda

They might have possibly settled in California or at least went there to find their fortune in gold, if this excerpt from Theodore C. Blegen' s "Norwegian Migration to America, 1825-1860" is correct. Here is a link to the post on Rootsweb where I found info on the Sjofna. I think this is definitely the ship, since most of it's passengers were from Gjerpen. http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/NORWAY/1999-02/0918899223
"For example, in the spring of 1856 a newspaper, commenting on the departure of the "Sjofna" from Porsgrund for Quebec with 240 emigrants on board, most of them from Gjerpen, attributes this emigration in part to the influence of a young farmer from Rosvald. Some years earlier he had gone to California; in the fall of 1855 he returned, a finely dressed gentleman, to tell of his adventures and of his decision to go back to America in the spring. {52} Such returned "America [284] travelers "call to mind the favorite hero of the Norwegian fairy stories, Askeladden, who always triumphed over difficulties and won half the kingdom. Not all the miners who went back to their native land were Askeladdens, however. Some returned discouraged and with empty hands, with dirges rather than songs of praise." |

I found Christian Johnson (55) and Ester Johnson (67) living in Wonewoc, Juneau, Wisconsin in the 1880 census. This is possibly who you are looking for. Johannesen commonly became Johnson in the US, and Aase became Ester. There were no other family members listed. Ester was also listed in the 1870 census. I was unable to find them in the 1860 census, given they emmigrated in 1856. |
