I'm looking for assistance in finding some information about my great-grandfather, Edvard Pedersen Ramsoj. He was residing in Ringsaker at the time my grandmother (Emma) was born in 1880. Her baptism certificate (a copy from 1946) has mention of him being a shoemaker. His wife was Karen Olsdatter. I do have a lot of information about Karen and her family. I have yet to have any luck with Edvard, after searching Digitalarkivet and the University of Tromso site. He and Karen emigrated to Neilsville Minnesota USA and then to Alberta, Canada. Any information or hints for searching very much appreciated. Thanks.

Very little, actually. His headstone here in Alberta says he was born in 1850. I don't know the specifics of when and have no idea of where. I did find a land patent letter on the Bureau of Land Management website a few years ago that may have been his, in MN.

Hi,

Okay the farm name Ramsoj... There is a farm named Ramsøi in the 1865 Norwagian census at Aardal, Sogn og Fjordane. A man of the name Peder Halvorson is the head of the household in 1865 and there are three boys in the family an Ole age 18, a Halvor age 14, and an Anders age 9 all born in Aardal. Obviously no Edvart but it is possible that one of these three might have a middle name, particularly of interest would be Halvor as his birth would have fairly close to 1850. And there is a farm named Ramsøien in Brandvold in Hedmarken (the same fylke as Ringsaker) also in 1865 but no Edvart nor Pedersons there. These are two places I would look for Edvart using the birthdate you have in the two parishes.

Have you collected Edvart and Karen's marriage record? Sometimes the names of the father or both parents are given for the couple as part of that record and often notes are made regarding other places of origin in Norway for the couple as well.

Please note the use of the Norwegian o with the slash. We Vesterheimers often forget that letter in our searches in Norwegian records and it is not too wise to overlook. I and j are somewhat interchangeable at some dates and places in Norway, another thing to keep in mind.

This may be yours leaving. Its from the Kristiania list at Digitalarkivet. Interesting to note two children but a bit of a ripple is not a girl. This is the only Edvart Pederson whose occupation is listed as shoemaker....

Is Ramsey the name they used over here?

Good Luck

Emmas baptismal record is #101
Edvard Pedersens baptismal record is #195 he was born July 13 1850 and his parents were Peder Eriksen and Karen Pedersdatter at Ovraasberget under Ramsøien in Brandval.

Yes, they used Ramsey here. The ship's record looks correct - Emma did have brothers Ole and Peder - interesting Emma is not mentioned there. I have seen Karen's baptismal record on line (Ringsajer 1850), but have not located a marriage record yet. I don't have much time today, but will be back in touch soon, when I havemore time to view your information. Thanks so much - you two were a tremendous help in my search for the Tronnes side, and again now.

Thank you again for your help. Re; the o with the slant through it - I am a member of a local Norwegian Society and one of their newsletters had keyboard strokes to create that letter, as well as the a and e joined together, but unfortunately, I can't find that newsletter. I think that that is part of my problem on digitalarkivet, as well as trying to weed through the Norwegian. This is a great site and great forum. You have both been so kind and so helpful. I will let you know as I find out more.
