I’m looking for my heritage. My great Grandfather Haakon Holm was born Nov.25, 1847 and sailed to Minnesota U.S.A in 1869. I’m looking for any help and information with this.
Thank you, Jim

Even with all of the above information he was not easy to find in the immigration records. The only likely candidate was H Hollm. The orginal manifest does not contain any other data other than his name H Holm and his age 20. The date of arrival is off by two years from the census data but mistakes can be made in old data.
Name: H Holm Gender: Male Age: 20 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847 Date of Arrival: 1867 Vessel: Peruvian Search Ship Database: View the 'Peruvian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec Roll: C-4522
No other passengers with the last name Holm and arrival dates from 1867 to 1871 seem to fit your man.
Note the post after the informatin from eibache.

Hakon Hermansen born Nov 25 1847 in Grue is most likely your Haakon H. Holm. He was born on the farm Holmen and his parents were Herman Christiansen and Anne Olsdatter, see #273 Hakon Hermansen moved out from Grue parish July 2 1869 with the intention to go to "Amerika", see #93

If Hakon Hermansen born Nov 25 1847 in Grue is your great Grandfather, your great-great Grandparents were married Dec 13 1825, see #45 Herman Christiansen was then 27 years old and Anne Olsdatter 22 years. Herman, his parents and siblings in 1801 Herman was baptized Oct 7 1798, see #108

Okay, I just got off the phone with my dad. The info that Lyndal40 1st came up with is right on with Carver ,Josephine,Herold and Hillard. He has no Idea who Rebecca, Clara and Emma are? My dad remembered Haakon was a general store owner was big with the masons and city hall in Carver. We are wandering if with the added info from eibache , are we talking about 2 different people or the same? Dad also remembers that Haakon came to Minnesota and left to Norway and back to Carver ? Why? Is their records of this or is he using Hermansen one time and Holm another? Dad is thinking he is using H H Holm (Hakon Herman(sen) Holm) as he also remembers the Herman as the middle name? From the info could this be ? Were dose the Scotland come in as in his search there was a dispute of are we from Norway or Scotland? Is it normal to have Hakon and Herman with different ser names? Assuming Herman was my GGG were does Christiansen go? |

Well James those are a lot of questions, It was not unusual for immigrants from Norway to go from a port in Norway to a Port in England and then transfer to a ship from England to America. As far as ancestors it looks like Christian Hermansen and Sigri Arnesdatter had a son Herman Christensen who married Annie Olsdatter who then had a son Hakon Hermensen Holm who is your great-grandfather. If all of this is correct you have gone three generations back in Norway. It is not unusual to have three names the given name, Haakon, after his father Hermansen ie son of Herman and the farm name Holm. The farm name could change several times if the person moved from farm to farm. |

I am quite confident that your great Grandfather is the Hakon Hermansen I found born at the Holmen farm Nov 25 1847. Unfortunately the ship he travelled on from Norway to England has not been found (yet). Regarding the questions on naming practice it would be beneficial to look into the online article http://www.nndata.no/home/jborgos/names.htm

Your great Grandfathers parents were Herman Christiansen and Anne Olsdatter. The parents of Herman Christiansen, your G-G-Grandparents, were Christian Hermansen and Sigri Arnesdatter. Anne Olsdatter was baptized Aug 19 1803, see #70 her parents, your G-G-Greatparents were Ole Olsen Hoxmoe and Kirsti Hougnesdatter. You will find them in the 1801 census. Ole Olsen Hoxmoe and Kirsti Hougnesdatter Garvig in Strøm were married March 18 1790, see No4 From the 1801 census you find the father of Ole Olsen (44) - it was Ole Olsen 74 years old. Kari Haagensdatter (68) is his 3rd wife but she was not Oles (44) mother. Ole was baptized July 31 1757, see left column on right page his mother was Ronaug Thoresdatter. Ole Olsen and Ronaug Thoresdatter were married Oct 30 1753. See middle of right column on right page Ronaugs parents were Thore Johansen and Marithe Thorstensdatter, østre Bye. Rønnoug was baptized Oct 13 1728, see top of left column on left page
