I am searching for Fonseth ancestors in Norway but have been unable to find anyone by this name in the Digital Archives. My husband's mother Myrtle Fonseth b. 1908 (in Canada?) was the daughter of Oscar Fonseth b. 1889 in North Dakota. Oscar's parents were from Norway. We have had no luck in identifying them. We assume they immigrated to Canada from Norway. Has anyone heard of this surname in Norway - what area?
Thank you for any information.

It could be that Fonseth is a farm name, the nearest is Fundset which is in Flesberg, Buskerud. Need some names to confirm that this could be the place Oscars parents came from. |

This seems to be todays Fønseth in Flesberg Einar. The farm is located to the easten part of Flesberg west from a small forest lake "Smedtjern" in Lyngdal sub parish is now abandoned. This area is called "Fønsetskogen" the Fønsetforest, the farm/land could have be cleared as early as after the black death 1350.

The information about the names of his parents should be recorded on his death certificate. The poster has been advised previously on another message board to obtain that and given a URL link to show her how and where to order it. |

According to death records of Fonseths Even Olsen Fonseth was born 1841 Norway and his wife was Bergit (Bessie, Bridgett) Dokken b 14 Apr 1846 Norway who may have immigrated about 1872. Even Olsen's given name on death record did not include Fonseth surname but his grave marker does which was placed by children. He lived in Duluth, MN in 1915 and I believe he had sons named Henry, Edward and Oscar. There may be more. I can find little info about him in the US - name could be misspelled and/or he may have gone by Even Olsen. Kathy |

Even Olsen was born Dec 16 1841 and baptized Jan 9 1842, see #4 his parents were Ole Evensen and Berith Olsdatter at Fundset-eie in Lyngdal. Evens mother was a widow in 1865 Evens parents were married Dec 1831, see #1 Ole Evensen was then 32 years old and came from Fløtaager, Berith Olsdatter was 22 years old and came from Fundset. Ole Evensen was baptized April 11, see next to the last record on right page. From the 1801 census you can see that Oles mother was Jørran Carlsdatter, again she was the daughter of Carl Heitlersen and Jørran Tostensdatter. Oles parents Even Marcusen, Næsset and Jørran Carlsdatter, Flaatager were married April 14 1799, see 3rd couple from top of righ page Even Marcusens parents in 1801

Finding Bergit (Bessie, Bridgett) Dokken b 14 Apr 1846 is more of a challenge. If she was born at a Dokken farm, there is/was about 20 with that name, if she just took the farm name because she worked there it will be even more of a challenge. If you could supply a fathers name it would be quite beneficial. |

Hi, could this be Even Olsen Fonseth in census-1880 for Township 135 And 136, Richland, Dakota Territory?
In that case, Even & Betsy married in Norway, and got a girl Caroline born in Norway about 1869. There are btw Dokken farms in Flesberg, Buskerud.
Census-1900 has this entry. Could it be him? Name: Evan Oleson Residence: Fargo city, Cass, North Dakota Birthdate: Dec 1839 Birthplace: Norway Father's birthplace: Norway Mother's birthplace: Norway Marital status: Widowed Estimated marriage year: 1875 Immigration year: 1872 Birth year is 2 years off, and marriage year indicate 1875, so it doesnt appear to be the same person as in census-1880, or...?
PETER PAUL TOBOLA (aka Peter Tobin) (1891-1970) from St. Paul, Ramsey, MN married ANNA C. FONSETH b. ab 1882-1883 in Kindred, Cass County, North Dakota, d. July 13, 1960, St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota Death certificate for Anna C. Tobin at Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, Minnesota, lists her parents as Evan Fonseth and Bertha Dukken
The Kriske-Majchrzak Family Tree contains info about Anna C. Fonseth. Does it list more info about her parents?

Hi, you are right about the Dokken farms in Svene/Flesberg Jan Peter.
Are you sure that Bergitte was born April 14. 1846? I wonder if Bergit Dokken was Bergit Halvorsdatter Dokken born April 27.1848 in Næs in Hallingdal in Buskerud to Halvor Olsen Dokken and Kari Haavelsdatter #81.
Even Olsen left Fønset and Flesberg, liklely before 1865, I think he settled down in Eker or Strømsgodset, todays Drammen town in Buskerud because August 13. 1872 in Skoger parish in Buskerud Even Olsen Eker-Strømsgodset age 30 married Bergit Halvordsdatter age 24 from Næs in Hallingdal. Fathers: Ole Evensen and Halvor Olsen #11
Next day on August 14. they are recorded in the church book as emigrants, dest USA, right page #89
Evens oldest sister Jørand Olsdr. born 1835 emigrated from Fønset-eie 1869, see right page #10 6/4 April 6. Pigen (Unmarried) Jørand Olsdr Fønseteie age 34 1/2 America.

From this listing it looks like Birgit has been "home" to bring her daughter Caroline to Amerika. It says she is No. 804's wife - could not find 804 - he should be Even Olsen I think. Even was a servant at Fossesholm in 1865 Birgit was a servant at Gustad in 1865 quote: Next day on August 14. they are recorded in the church book as emigrants, dest USA
- I read this as "Even Olsens Kone Strømsgodset - Birgit Halvorsdatter". Did Even leave later? |

Henry Olsen Fonseth is registered in the World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. He is born January 2nd, 1876. North Dakota 1915 State Census list him in Towner county. One "Annie Fonseth" listed in the same census could be his wife. He is also listed in the Towner County, ND, Hansboro News published between September 1, 1915 and October 31, 1915.
Kathy; do you have any US-census information for the Fonseth's you are seeking? And who are Lars and Bergite H Haaven? Is Bergite H Haaven = Bergit Halvordsdatter Dokken, i.e. wife of Even Olsen Fonseth? If so; who is Lars Haaven?
