I made an error when doing the previous posting....I am in search of Gregor Halvorson, rather than Halvor Halvorson. Gregor was born in Numendahl, Norway on 17, Feb. of 1856. I am sorry for the error. -------------------------------------
I am in seach of information regarding my Great-grand father who went by the name of Gregor Halvorson in Numendahl,Norway. He was born 17,Feb.1847. I do not know what year he came to the United States. He later married a girl from that same area who was named Berget ?Baasket, I believe was her maiden name. Her date of birth was 6, May, 1856.. I believe they came to this country on separate trips, and later married in Dakota territory. Thank you very much for any information that you may find. |

I believe this is your Gregor and 1856 is a wrongspelliing. He was born Feb. 17. 1848 on Muregaard in Nore parish, the northern municipality in the valley of Numedal, baptised Greger on Marc 17, born to Farmer Halvor Olsen and Tollis Torbjørnsdatter Muregaard #3
Greger with his parents and 6 brothers on Muregaard 1865.
If you want more information I can look into the books from Nore and Uvdal, perhaps tomorrow if I reach the library, just give me a hint. Perhaps even who became his wife is mentioned there.

The easiest way to find when an emigrant came to the US is usually to check the 1900,1910 or 1920 US census enumerations. Your local public library will often offer free online access to check these if you don't subscribe to a service yourself.
The 1900 US census shows only one Norwegian born Gregor Halvorson living in the US - then in Walsh Co. ND with a wife named Bergit and eight (8) children in their household (2 children are already deceased). That census indicates that Gregor was born Feb of 1847 in Norway and that he immigrated to the US in 1878.
Maps of Norway would make it appear that from Numedal district of Buskerud the closest port for departure on a ship for emigration would probably be the large city/port of Oslo/Kristiania. So this means the freely accessible database of emigrant registrations from that port can be consulted by using the Digitalarkivet website databases.
Beginners course in how to use Digitalarkivet databases - http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/DigitalArchives.html
So, I quickly searched the database entitled "Emigranter fra Oslo 1867-1930" for persons with first names starting with the letters "gre" and then narrowing that group down to persons with last names starting with "h". That narrowed down the database to only 37 names, with many of those being women with names like Grethe Hansen and making it easy to scan through the few Gregor Halvorsen similar names.
Here's yours:
Gregor leaves from Oslo
It isn't hard if you study a little bit and apply a tiny bit of deductive reasoning. Note that your Gregor does not appear to have been travelling alone. |

Searching the ancestry.com data base for immigrants with the name Grgeor Halovorsen turns up very few candidates. The only one that comes close to fitting our Gregor is
Name: Greg Halversen Arrival Date: 29 Apr 1878 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1848 Age: 30 Gender: Male Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Destination: United States of America Place of Origin: Sweden Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Swedish Ship Name: Republic Search Ship Database: Search the Republic in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: New York
The only issue here is the identification of the person as Swedish. That comes as the person twenty or so people above him are identified as Swedish and next twenty or so are dittoed. |

There are several farms named Berget in Numedal. You also mentioned Baasket, very simlilar to Bekkeset in Nore parish. Betsey was americanized, could be her given name started with B, Berit, Birgit, Bergit.

Meanwhile I can give you the wedding record for Gregor´s parents Halvor Olsen and Tollis Torbjørnsdatter March 23. 1833. Halvor was from Muregaard and Tollis was from Omdalen, both from the upper part of Nore parish. Fathers: Ole Olsen Muregaard and Torbjørn Olsen Omdalen #14
Since they both were from the upper Nore the christening ceremonies for these families was taken place in Uvdal Stave Church from about 1168.

Halvor and Tollis had 7 more children (including Greger) born on Murugaarden between 1840 (Vilhelm) and 1853 (Tov) if someone want to include them.

From Nore and Uvdal Bygdebok. This information has likley come from a letter send to the family in Nore a looong time ago, remember that Greger had 9 siblings and he was the only who emigrated so they likley exchanged letters (not confirmed).
Likely the number 2 could have vanished and the date Mai 26. became Mai 6.
Your Berget was Birgit Toresdatter Bjørnelien. She was born Mai 26. 1856 to Torer Halvorsen and Mari Ingebretsdatter Bjørnelien, baptised June 11. 1856 #30
The family on Bjørnelien 1865, Bergit had a brother Halvor and a sister Aase. Her mother was born in Sigdal parish, Buskerud County. The parents married March 3. 1841in Nore.
The local name on Bjørnelien øvre was Rimput.

Here is Bergit in the 1900 US Census. The data indicate that she was at that time married for 19 years and had been living in the US for 22 years having immigrated to the US in 1878, the same year as her husband, Gregor.

Traditional Norwegian naming up to about 1900 can be confusing and difficult to understand even to most Norwegians. Tollis Torbjørnsdatter´s father was Torbjørn Omdalen or Torbjørn Olsen Omdalen, he married as Torbjørn Olsen Pinsland where he was born on. In the 1801 census on Pinsland he is Torbjørn Olsen.
The reason why he settled down on Omdalen can be found in this weddding from Oct. 18. 1777 when his father, "ungkarl" bachelor Ole Torbjørnsen Pinsland married to his mother widow Ragnild Larsdatter Omdalen, engaged on July 5. left page 5.& 6. line from bottom (some blurred ink but readable) here
5 july i Nore engagement bachelor Ole Torbjørnsen Pinsland and widow Ragnild Larsdr. Omdalen
Omdalen was his inheritance after his mother so he likely settled down there shortly after he married 1806.
