I am trying to find a passenger list for the Wilson Line ship Tasso, that sailed from Trondheim to Hull on 11 Jun 1874. I have found on this site a reference to that ship, sailing on that date, but I have not been able to find a passenger list. A distant relative in Norway told me that Ole was on that ship, along with John R. Hugdahl and Beret Hugdahl. Can anyone help me?

Thank you, Kċre. But I'm not sure what took you so long--my question was there for 12 minutes before you answered it completely!!! Ole Henriksen Hugdal (or Hugdahl) was my great grandfather, and until a week ago, we did not know for certain where in Norway he came from. The family tradition has been that he was from Trondheim, and it appears that was close. If this is the right person, and I think that it is, he came from Stĝren. Thank you again.

Thank you, Jo Anne. That is very helpful. But do you or does anyone else have a suggestion for why my great grandfather's family would have two living sons named Ole (district 220, persons numbered 1385 and 1386, 20 and 15 years old)?

Yes, that was common. If you read the great article on this site, Those Norwegian Names, it will explain Norwegian naming practices. Children were named after their grandparents, paternal first and then maternal, if both grandfathers were named Ole, well then you had two sons named Ole. In my family we had two sisters named Gjertrud in this country.

Sorry it took so looooong time..........

They were from Hugdal in Stĝren in Sĝr-Trĝndelag County not fare from Trondheim.
Strange about the two Ole´s, accordinng traditional naming first born son born Sept. 29. 1846 was named after his fathers father Ole and 3. born son Ole born Nov. 21. 1851 #1 He had an older brother Hendrik born 1844 named after his mothers father.
Both Ole had the same mother: Olava Hendriksdatter. Wonder which Ole he was named after.

If a widow married it was also a tradition to name the firstborn son after her late husband to honour him, this didn´t happened here.

No rules without an exception.

I think that it must take some practice to read old church records! Takk.
