They were brother and sister who left Modum on the SS Argo in 1869, bound for Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin via Hull. I am looking for the connecting ship from Hull/Liverpool to America.
Maren took the name Mary in America. I can trace her to Minneapolis, but not Martinius. Any US information on him would be very helpful, too. Thanks! |

Could you provide some more information. Birth dates of both Marin and Marinius would be very helpful. Also did Marin marry and if so what was her married name. Thank you. |

They left from Oslo April 23rd, 1869, Maren (20) and Martinius (22).
One Maria Samuelsn (20) is in the Canadian Passenger Lists database for 1865-1935, registered as arrived in 1869. Only year listed in the index. One Markus Samuelson (20) is also listed for that year. Martinius could possibly be transcribed as Markus with poor handwriting...

Re Maria Samuelsn above. She is listed in Ancestry.com as travelling with Frantz Samuelsn and an infant. She is listed in the manifest as wife.
Name: Frantz Samuelsn Gender: Male Age: 26 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1843 Date of Arrival: 1869 Vessel: Prussian
Name: Maria Samuelsn Gender: Female Age: 20 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849 Date of Arrival: 1869 Vessel: Prussian

Small correction, even if the emigration records show "Bustad" as Modum, they came from Langum, a farm in Skoger parish, see #38 & 39 Maren Sofie has given the age 21 and 4 months, Martinius 19 1/2. We find them also in the Skoger parish records Maren is #44 and Martinius #7 (Martinius was a twin, his brother Sigvard died 3 years old.) |

Thank you, all, for your assistance. I looked up the Nestorian passengers list and found Markus Samuelson. However, Maren wasn't listed with him, so I'm not sure if that was really him.
Maren married NH Roberts in Minnesota, Bloomfield County in 1874, I think. She went by the name Mary S. Roberts. They later moved onto to Minneapolis, where she died in 1907 or 1908. |

I do not know of a Bloomfield County in Minnesota. There is a Bloomfield Township in Filmore County. Is that where Maren and N H Roberts were married. |

A closer look at this family in the 1900 US Census from Ancestry.com casts some doubt on the identifcation, although the birth year and immigration year tend to match the dates we already have, but there are a very large amount of people listed here.. Perhaps there was a Marcus Samuelson who was born about the same time as Martiniius and who also immigrated about the same time and it is he that we are finding the data on.

Thank you for your work on this. The Marcus Samuelson you have found, I don't believe, is the Martinius Samuelson (Langum) I'm searching for. Martinius was born in 1849, not 1847. His mother's name was Mari Nilsdatter Varlo and his father's name was Samuel Johannesson.
Mary (Maren) Samuelsdatter married NH Roberts in Bloomfield Township, Fillmore County. |

- small correction: mother was Maren Torine Madsdatter, see my earlier posting of 16/09/2009 and the link to #7. Maren and Martinius parents were married June 26 in Haug church, Eiker, see #27. Samuel came from Langum, his father was Johannes Samuelsen. Maren Thorine came from Mjøndalen and her father was Mads Jensen. |

Yes, I would agree that the mother father listed here make the connection unlikely. However I would not totally depend on the birth year in the census data to be particularly accurate. Here is the same Marcus from the 1920 US Census with his birth year estimated at 1850.
Name: Marcus Samuelson [Marena Samuelson] [Marcus Vik] Home in 1920: Lien, Grant, Minnesota Age: 70 years Estimated Birth Year: abt 1850 Birthplace: Norway

Oops! I was mixed up in naming Martinius' mother- thanks, Einar, for fixing that error. Mari Nilsdatter was Martinius' grandmother.
I will keep that Markus information ready for further reference when I can take the time to dig further in the near future. I have a relation from my paternal side that also lived in Grant County, Minnesota around the same time.
I'm still searching for Maren or Mary's connection to the US from after the SS Argo. Thanks again! |
