My Swedish great-grandparents immigrated through Christiania, Norway in 1884 on the Hekla II. I'm looking for plans showing the steerage accommodations and any steerage passenger testimonies about what the voyage was like on this ship. Does anyone know what sources might help me with this?

Yes, I have read this; it had wonderful information! But, since it was a promotional advertisement for the Thingvalla LIne, I don't think it is unbiased. I also would like to have, if possible, first hand stories told by the steerage immigrants. Also, the pamphlet doesn't show how steerage was arranged on the Hekla II. I think it shows 1st and 2nd class, but not steerage. I've read stories about steerage voyages in the mid 1800s on other steamships, but don't know if these experiences can be transferred to the Hekla II. Thanks for responding to my question.

I have found a detailed account written by a man traveling as a steerage passenger on the S/S Island of the Thingvalla Line in 1892. It is however in old Norwegian, and about 8 pages long.

I wish I could read Norwegian. I have a hard enough time translating modern Norwegian, let alone trying to do this with old Norwegian. Is there some way I can get access to this? I might be able to find someone to translate it for me. I've done that with my Swedish Grandmother's letters which are in a Swedish American dialect.
