I am searching for the passenger list for the S/S Helvetia of the National Line that reached New York on 27 May 1878, bring passengers from Bergen to NY via Liverpool. Supposedly our ancestor Jens Haugland, wife and two children were on that ship. I can find info about the ship but not the passenger list. Where should I look?
Thank you,

Ancestry.com a subscriptions site has the passenger manifest for the Helvetia reaching New York on 27 May, 1878. There are 306 passengers on board this ship according to the original manifest, very few of them are from Norway. I took a quick look and could not identify a Jens Haugland among the passengers on board this ship. I will look a little harder and see what else I can find.

Perhaps some further information on Jen Haugland and his family will help find him. Could you provide ages or birth years and the names of the rest of the family and where they settled in the US.

Emigration record for Jens Christophersen Hougland, with wife Christi and son Christopher in 1878.
The daughter Anna left Norway with a prepaid ticket and the Inman line in 1881.

Thanks for the information. It makes me wish that I knew the Norwegian language. Now this brings up another question. The family lore is that Anna remained behind to accompany her younger brother Arne who had not been confirmed yet. The story was that the family did not want to bring Arne to a "heathen land" until after his confirmation. Arne was b. Oct 1863, but he does not seem to appear with Anna on the 1881 register. The question becomes "When did Arne emigrate?"

Translations of church record headings and census column headings can be found in the articles at -

There are also links to very good online 'dictionaries' (long lists) of Norwegian words translated to English available above right on this page under Links

In spite of the spelling of the last name this is a good candidate for the family arriving in 1878. The spelling in the orginal manifest is Hango as I would read it.

Name: Jens C Hangs
Arrival Date: 6 May 1878
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1822
Age: 56
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Liverpool and London, England
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Norway
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian
Ship Name: The Queen

He is travelling with his wife Kristine age 54 and son Christopher age 17.
