Hei Wanda.
Happy Leif Erikson Day.

The first Europeen born in North America is supposed to be Snorre Thorfinsson born in "Leifsbuene" (Leifs cabins) in Vinland about 1004 to Gudrid Torbjørnsdatter and Thorfinn KarLsevne.
Gudrid´s 1. husband was Leif Erikssons brother Thorstein.

Vinland is often misinterpreted and has nothing with vine to do, Vin means grasland, there are several places in Norway ending on -vin, Bjørgvin, Granvin, Hovin etc.

When the exploerer Helge Ingstad and his wife Anne Stine rediscovered Vinlan in the 1960´s they sailed from Greenland using the information from the old Greenlander Saga which told about the journey passing Helluland "Slab land" (Baffin Island) Markland "Forest land" (Labrador) and finaly Vinland, and how many days the Vinland trip took.

Ingstad also made good research in USA and Canada since the Saga told about vild grapes and fishing Salomon in the river he managed to find out how fare north did the vild grapes grow and how fare south did the Atlantic Salomon go about 1000 knowing in what area Vinland must be.

He tells in his book when they sailed into the bay at L`Ance Aux Meadows he knew it was Vinland.

Thanks for that information, Kåre!
I think many of us are just interested in when our families came over, but the first journey was actually made many, many years before. The Norwegian exploration to North America is very interesting and could be part of the reason for the later migration when farmland became scarce, for a growing Norwegian population.

Thanks again! Wanda
