My husband and I thought it would be very interesting to try to find out about his Grandfather. However, we know VERY little about his grandfather. His name was Sigvart Halvorsen. My father-in-law believes he was born around Bergen. According to the Social Security Death Index, he was born November 1, 1898. But, I've found inconsistencies on that index. He came from Norway as a stowaway to New Orleans, LA. He had two brothers, at least. He never spoke of his family and spoke very little English. Can anyone help me start? We have no documents or anything. I would really appreciate any pointers or advice. I know it's very little to go on. Thanks

What did the US censuses tell you about his age and year of immigration to the US? Where did he live in the US? When he married what information did he list about his parentage on his marriage license application? Did he become a naturalized citizen? You could look for the various papers that had to be filled out for that process.

We start by gathering more basic information.

Here is a person from the 1930 US Census who could be your person. If so then his year of arrival is given as 1925. Question for you is this your person. If you have a little more information to share with us it would be helpful.

Name: Siebert Halvorsen
Home in 1930: New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana
View Map
Age: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1899
Birthplace: Norway
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Rosetta
Race: White

Your Sigvart traveled without beeng registered in the shipping protocol.
We have (at least) two options.
Halvorsen could be a familyname or his father could be Halvor (Halvors son).
If Halvorsen was a family name Sigvart could according traditional Norwegian naming practise have been bap. to his fathers given name: Sigvart ?
Traditional Norwegain naming ended about 1900.

Well, since his wife was Rosetta, that has to be him. We've always known him as Sigvart. That certainly gives me somewhere to start.

To Hopkins- Thank you for those ideas. I've never done anything like this, so it's all new to me.
To Kaarto- Thank you for the traditional naming practices. I have a lot to learn to find our family!!

Hi,

Since he is in the Social Security death index you might want to get his application for his social security number. If you search his SSDI record at www.rootsweb.com, click on the SS5 information there. There is a cost to get this record but the advantage is it would be information that he himself supplied.

In the 1900 Norwegian census there is a Sigvart Halvorson born 22 July 1900 living in Ringebu, Oppland with his parents and sibling named Hans. There really isn't enough information yet for you to rule this Sigvart in or out, just keep in mind.

Good Luck

If this is them, then they were passengers. My family also told stories about someone being a stowaway, but it didn't hold water, once I found their name on the passenger list. On the original document, listed on Ancestry, it looks like Sigvard and it lists his as being a Seaman. It also states that Rossanta was his wife and that he paid for their passage. It also looks like the town that he was from, could have been Roan or Roam.

Hope this helps!

I believe this is his birth/baptismal information from the Roan in Bjørnør parish records. He is listed at #1.
Source information: Sør-Trøndelag county, Roan in Bjørnør, Parish register (official) nr. 657A09 (1894-1904), Birth and baptism records 1899, page 33.

Sorry, I clicked Submit Reply before finishing with this info from that record.
Date of birth - November 1, 1898, Baptismal Date - January 15, 1899, Full name - Sigvart Julius, Father and Mother - Halder Halvorsen ( b. 1867) and Severine Jensdatter (b. 1876) The farm I'm not sure about, because of the first letter. Possibly Froningen or Troningen?

Wanda,
that was a great finding !!
Now I understand why he was "invisible" in the 1900 census, Sigvart´s last name was spelled Haldorsen after his father Haldor given name (Haldors son) which he changed to Halvorsen in USA.
Troningen is correct.

Here is his confirmation record from Roan in Bjørnør. # 6 at the bottom. It looks like he was born on Troning and was on Kiran, at the time of his confirmation. If you notice, he is listed as Sigvart Julius Haldorsen, which would of been the traditional Norwegian naming pattern that Kåre was referring to. He must have switched to Halvorsen.

Source information: Sør-Trøndelag county, Roan in Bjørnør, Parish register (official) nr. 657A10 (1905-1919), Confirmation records 1914, page 99.

- it is Troningen.
Sigvart Haldorsens (Halvorsens) parents Halvor Julius Halvorsen and Severine Karoline Jensen were married Dec 27 1895, see #13
Haldors (Halvors) father was Captain Samson Halvorsen and Severines father was Jens Jensen.

Severine was actually baptized Karoline Severine, she was born July 14 1876, see #54 her parents were Jens Edvard Jensen (1852) and Sofie Karoline Johansdatter (1851) at Vedø (married 1871).
Haldor Julius was born Oct 26 1869 and baptized April 18 1870, see #2 his parents were Samson Halvorsen (22) and Anne Sofie Pedersdatter (28) at Skaugvold.

Here is Sigvart's sister Elen Sofie. Born February 14, 1901 and baptized April 28, 1901. They are still living on Troningen, in Roan, Sør-Trøndelag.
