Yes, that sounds plausible. The 1929 arrival list him as seaman, and his departure as Havana, Cuba. Norwegian emigrants did not have a stop over in Cuba, so he must have been there on duty. He could have worked on the Turrialba.

The family lived on farm Hongsand until about 1910.
Here is a picture of the old house "Gammelstua" build before 1850 that is now moderized and for rent.
It seems to be a beautiful, idyllic place, the house is only 13 yards from the shore, see here

Hi,
you wrote in your first posting that Sigvart had two brothers.

He had:
An older brother Halvdan Sigurd was born on Været (the parents lived on Troningen as renters) Sept. 6. 1896, see top left hand #33

Halvdan lived as a fosterson with his granparents Samson Halvorsen and Anne (Sofie Pedersdatter) Halvorsen on Troningen. They moved from Gildeskål to Roan perhaps when Haldor settled down there.
Petrine must be Haldors sister and Ingval was a seaman temporary living in Finland, see here.

Information from your family told that Sigvart was from the Bergen area. His grandfather Samson was born in Fjelberg which is close to Bergen.

In 1900 Samson was a "Jækteskipper", skipper on a boat very similar to this Jekte

I'm glad the other brother was found. I was wondering where he was, since I kept finding more and more sisters.

My father in law is in complete shock over this discovery. Thanks to you he finally knows about his family! Could someone maybe explain exactly how this information was discovered? I would like to see how far back I can go, but I'm not sure how you were able to find so much. Thanks again!!

Hi, I am happy for your father in law, I hope he is well.

All this information is coming from church books, censuses in USA and Norway and "Bygdebooks", local historian books from a municipality, most municipalities, except the towns, has "Bygdebooks" where farms and families who lived there are mentioned as fare back as possible.

The problem here was where to look since Sigvart, as expected, had a dif. last name than his father in the 1900 census.
When Roam (Roan ) in Norway came up in Wandas posting from the US National Archives the leithmotiv was found.

We are all amateurs here, after some time you will find genealogy easier than expected.

I recieved some information from Anne Hildrum, she had acess to the local books from Roan and Bjørnør called" Bjørnørfolket" and send me information from Volume 4 page 443-444.
I will share it here, it need to be translated first.
It´s about what happened to the family after the mother died and the children were older.

Could be possible to go further back.

Haldor and Severines children, information is from the book "Bjørnørfolket" (The people from Bjørnør) Volume 4 p. 443-444.

Haldor Halvorsen (the father) moved to Trondheim where he died 1951.

- Halvdan Sigurd 1896 was raised on farm Nordstigan in Roan. As an adult he worked on several farms in Strinda in todays Trondheim. He died 1950 in a nursing home for Tubeculosis in Selbu and is buried in the cemetery of Selbu church from 1150.

- Sigvart Julius 1898, left Norway, the family thought he probably lived in England (From that we can assume they never heard from him again)
Sigvarts sister, see next, settled down in Bergen, could be Sigvart stayed there for some time since Bergen was mentioned)

-Elen Sofie 1901, known as Sofie, married to a Nilsen in Bergen

- Karl Oskar 1903, sailor, Chief Officer/Mate, emigrated to USA where he became a Hotel Director, married Åsta from Rjukan in Eastern Norway.

- Klara Augusta 1905 married Augen Marthinsen and settled down in Kongsvinger, eastern Norway. Her son Halvdan born i Bjørnør lived in Trondheim, he died 1993.

- Hjørdis Oline 1907, later she used Hjørdis Cecilie, conf 1922, married Reidar Dahl, Trondheim. Hjørdis died March 1. 1949, buried in the cemetery of Tilfredshet chapell in Trondheim. A son Kjell Dahl settled down in Selbu.

- Thora 1909 died 19 days old, buried in Roan cemetery

- Herdis Severine 1911 d 1943, buried in Melhus municipality in the cemetery of Melhus church

Yes I saw that, some records has her wrongspelled as Davidsdatter.

This could he Halvors parents, Samson and Karen (unknown last name) on Aasebø 1801 with 4 children, two servants and Samsons mother Christie Samsonsdatter age 73 and widow..
From his wedding record he was born about 1815, could be Halver age 6, b 1795 died young and Halvor was named after him, see here .

HI.
Here is more information I recieved from Anne Hildrum.

Haldor Halvorsen was a sailor. He was supposed to have been a seaman on the boats from Kråkøy, a trading centre in Roan.
It´s known he also joined the rowing boats on the shuttle tours in Roan.

June 5. 1902 Haldor was hired as "Høvedsmann" Steerman when he and two men brought "Lensmann" Sheriff Berg´s (Christian Fredrik Berg) home from a business trip to Osen.
As "Høvedsmann" Haldor was responsible for the crew.

The wind was fresh nordwestly gale. Haldor had fastened "Råseilet" Square rig. Passing Børøyhamn (Børøya is an island north in Roan municipality halfway between Osen and Roan) they were overtaken by a a powerful gust and before they had time to lowering the sail the boat capsized. They fall into the sea, the crew and the sheriff survived.
Only a protocol that the sheriff had in his bag was soaked.

Source: Årbok from Bjørnar 1968 page 28.

It´s no information that the boat shipwrecked. It might have been Tuxham, "Lensmannsbåt" the sheriffs boat, a picture from Kråkøy in Roan 1905 shows Tuxham

This map shows the location of Roan north-west in the county. Further north you will find Osen.
Central south is Trondheim, Melhus and east from Trondheim is Selbu, here

In searching for Karl Oskar Halvorsen in the U.S., I found one that was married to Astrid. I know that Kåre stated that it was Åsta, but I'm wondering if Astrid may be correct? The other difference is that the bygdebok said that he became a Hotel Director. The Carl Halvorsen that I found was an Electrical Engineer, who worked for the Otis Elevator Company.

1930 United States Federal Census

He is listed as immigrating in either 1920 or 1925. I can't make out the last number clearly. His wife, immigrated in 1922. They married when he was 24 and she 23, so probably about 1926.

As I said, this was the closest I could find to Karl Oskar Halvorsen.
