Please,- advice to trace my Great Grandfather - Othar Hjalmar Bommen, born circa 1851 in Norway. My information shows he never appeared on the UK census until 1911, and then as a visitor to an address in Cardiff, as Norway Resident. He is described as Master Mariner. I have an alternative spelling for his second name - "Hgalman". His first appearance in UK records appears to be on the marriage certificate (1897) of his daughter Mabel Bommen to my grandfather Percival Lewer. This is also the first UK record of Mabel bommen. I am fairly new to researching family history and not yet overseas so ALL help will be appreciated. |

Oh Thankyou so much. This is terrific to have so much information so quickly. With 6 siblings I may have relatives alive in Norway. I am not sure how to use the references you have indicated -#28 and #3. I still am a real novice at this research. I still cant believe how quickly you so kindly responded. Again thankyou. John |

Hi, the # refers to a number in the left column in the church records to help you to find the exact record. Since this is your first visit here I understand It can be difficult to read or understand the records, believe me its much easiser that expected.
There are still many Bommen living in Kongsberg, many from this family were merchants in Kongsberg.

Hi Kare. Again thankyou for your immense help. This information is coming in quicker than I can digest it ! Can you suggest sites I can visit to look for descendents and relatives of Othar. I, obviously am unable to read or understand Norwegian, but I may be able to use "Google Translator" to guide me. Again thankyou and I am almost overwhelmed by what I have learned in such a short space of time. John |

Hi, Othar Hjalmar also had a brother Carl Ludvig born 1841, he moved from Kongsberg and lived as a merchant i Tĝnsberg town, Vestfold County in 1865.
A descendant after Carl Ludvig Bommen lives in western Norway, here is his family tree.
I guees he will be happy to get on contact with a relative from England.
Can be a challenge to Google Bommen in Norway, can be misunderstood with Toll road "Bom-Bommen" or Bommen (Boom) on a sailing ship .
More information will turn up later.

Probate regiser March 13. 1773 for deceased Marthe Ingebrektsdatter, she died 2 months ago. Recidece, paa Dyhre=Myr grund, on todays Dyrmyr ground not fare from this protected house, earlier farm Dyrmyr (today the building is a school)
- Heirs and husband to deceased Marthe Ingebrektsdater was Lars Hansen Bommen and son Ingebrikt (died 1796) age 23 working for assessor Heltzen and temporary in Copengagen, Denmark. Kari Larsdr. was Ingebrikts sister married to Tollev Johansen Fjerdingstad. Another sister was Mallene Larsdr. married to Iver Jensen Green. Youngest of Ingebrikts siblings was Maria Larsdr. age 17.
Dyrmyr above was Heltzen´s recidence so we can assume Ingebrikt Larsen worked there.
That will be all for today, bring up more information and records tomorrow.

Hi John. No wonder the comparison with the family name Bommen with a toll road. Lars Hansen Bommen was "Bom-Opseer" boom guard at the old approach road to Kongsberg where everyone who left the town was ransaked without regard to title and rank in order to prevent the theft of silver and powder. Lars Hansen Bommen is mentioned as guardian in this probate register from 1747 for the two daughters, Kirsten age 4 and Anne Mallene age 1 to deceased Christopher Tiĝstelsen. Christopher Tiĝstelsen seems to have been Lars Hansen Tiĝstelsens uncle, the brother to Lars father Hans Tiĝstelsen (Kĝstelsen), see the wedding record for Mai 12. 1744, left column 7. & 8.line from bottom, see here. 12 Mai Lars Hansen Kĝstelsen and Martha Ingebretsdatter.
The boom guard lived in "Bomstua" build about 1721 (the toll road was closed after a vedict in the Supreme Court 1841). The profit was ment to maintain two bridges, "Gamlebrua" and "Nybrua" (the Old bridge and the New bridge).
Bomstua was inhabited until about 1970, the houses is restored and belong to the muesum and is the only "Bomstue" which is preserved in Norway. The first public road in Norway from 1624 called "Sĝlvveien" the Silver Road, todays "Gamleveien" (Old road) passes here.

Your Ingebret Larsen Bommen, age 23 in the probate regiser from 1773 above was born 1751, bap. July 22. See 6. bap. (18. line) from top: eod.d (same days as above, 22 July) Lars Hansen Bomens son Ingebret, see here
Engebret was named after his mother Martha´s father Ingebret. Martha Ingbretsdatter, Ingebrets daughter, according traditional Norwegian naming practise Ingebret had an older brother Hans named after his fathers father Hans Tiĝsolfsen.

Hi Kare. Thankyou again for all the information. Sorry if I appeared to have gone away for a few days, but we had shows on Friday and Saturday in places a long way away. I have driven nearly 600 Km in the last few days and got home this morning at 4.00am. So I will take a day or two to recover. The information is really helpful and I am collating it in the family tree. Again many thanks John |
