Hi, I am hoping that i can continue tracing my linage back to before the 30th may 1872 , when my ancestors left Kristiania bound for Napier NZ, onboard the Hvoding. They were, Niels Anderson (37yrs), b.1834 Rygee, Norway, wife, Arna Hanser, b. 1836 Metskog, Sweden???, children, Axel Hanser(5yrs), Harald Hanser(3yrs), Walborg Hanser(7/12mths). thanks to the information passed from other 'family relatives' i have found all the documentation leading up to them leaving Norway and arriving in NZ. As the story goes, Neils and Arna met at Akershus Castle where Neils was in the Kings own Body Guards and Arna worked in the Kitchens, they were married in the castles chapel... I have Neils Parents details (I think he was adopted), Father, Annih Chiel, b. Rygee, Norway, Farmer. Mother, Knudsen, Rygee, Norway and for Arna, Mother Hans, b. Metskog, Norway, Carpenter. Mother, Ingborg Halsted, Metskog, Norway... As I cannot speak or read Norwegian I am pretty stuck, but still very interested in following any leads. I am funnily enough working off Norway at present and hope to be returning to Kristainsand, Norway somewhere on the 12th Dec before returning home to my family in England. I am hoping to travel to Oslo before returning home on the 16/17th Dec and have a quick look around and I will be returning in the summer time. If anyone can help I would be very grateful... I would also be interested in meeting relatives no matter how distant... There is a book written by Rachael Johnson ‘From Norway with Love’ where I believe most of this information comes from, I am continuing with my own searches based on information given to me by my cousin. My Grand Mother was an Anderson and my Gt. Gt. Grandfather was Niels Anderson. Thanks for your time and wishing you all a very safe, happy time at Christmas with your families…

Hi. You have a lot of information, maybee the Norwegian spellings is differenet.
Rygee could be Rygge, a municipality in Østfold county.
Metskog could be Mittskog-Midtskogen, a district in Elverum or a farm name.
The name on Niels father, Annih Chiel, must be an English spelling on how it sounded in Norwegian, the alphabet is pronounced quite different. Niels father was liklely Anders, the closest I can get is Anders Kjelsen. Ingeborg Halsted could be Ingeborg Halstensdr (her fathers 1. name was Halsten)
All the children were born in Oslo.
Do not let the names and locations confuse you, but somewhere you have to start.

Hello Kåarto,
Thanks for the reply, yes the children were born in Oslo.
Axel Frederick Anderson, b. 25 Sept 1868 Oslo, Norway, d. 31 Mar 1945 in PN, NZ. From Norweign Public Records the name is spelt Axel Hanser (5yrs) Harold Anderson, b.1869 Oslo, Norway, d.04 Apr 1956. From Norweign Public Records the name spelt Harald Hanser (3yrs). and lastly, Valborg Johanna, b. 1869 Norway, d. 17 Jun 1920. Pg 17. From Norweign Public Records the name is spelt Walborg Hanser (7/12mnths). I think Hanser may be Hansen, but then the 'english' pronounciation is completely wrong... In any case, I have a start and appreciate you time. I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of these people whe they left Oslo. Thanks again

Here they are listed as emigrants on Høvding in 1872. Niels Andersen, Anna Hansen and Harald Nilius Andersen are recorded as moving out from Gamle Aker parish to Australia in 1872, see #55, 56 & 57 to the far right. Valborg Johanne Andersen is listed on the next page, see #58 but Axel Fredrik has not been found.

Valborg Johanne was born Oct 31 1871 and baptized April 21 1872, see #107 the occupation of her father Niels Andersen was (ølkjører) to transport beer (and the family was living in Bergfjerdingen #9.) Harald Nilius was born March 16 1869 and baptized Dec 12, see #332 the parents were not married and Harald is listed as a child born out of wedlock. In a note it is stated that Anne was the mother of another child (Axel?) born out of wedlock.

Hey Wayne, Im also a relative of yours. Neils being my Gt. Gt. Gt. Grandfather. Im Daniel Anderson (28), son of Craig and Jeanette, son of Bryan and Jill, etc in Palmerston North, NZ. Im currently working throughout the UK with my wife on 2year visas and are heading to Oslo for the weekend with super cheap flights, so jumped online seeing if I could find any sites of family history to visa. I came across this post from 9years ago and was wondering if theres anywhere you came across in your searching that has any reliance in Oslo other than Akershus Castle? |
