Can anyone please help me in regards to finding what ship my great grandfather was on. His name is Jahn Beathon (Beaton) and he was a Chief Engineer. His wife's name if Regine Arneson and they were residents of Eker Parish. Unfortunately I believe the records from Stavanger were destroyed by fire, which has made chasing this side of the family tree very difficult.

I do have a Certificate for Innoculation for Cowpox for their son Karl Johan Beathon (Beaton) which I had translated from Norwegian and it was dated 7th July, 1880 . They immigrated to Scotland - not sure when.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Many Thanks
Linda Gray

It would be helpful if you could supply a little bit more info.
If the family resided in Eker (Eiker) parish which is in Buskerud county there is no need to look in parish records in Stavanger which is in Rogaland county.
Since Jahn Beathon (Beaton) is your g-grandfather there must be possible to supply some dates, born when, age when died and when he died.
Where did the son Karl Johan get the innoculation, how old was he then, etc.

The marriage record from Eiker, Buskerud for John Beatton and Karen Regine Arnesen:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=10&filnamn=vi06241860&gardpostnr=917&sokefelt=skjul

The earlier entry for Karen Regine with her family in the 1865 Norwegian census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=45&filnamn=f60624&gardpostnr=2336&sokefelt=skjul

Find what ship John Beatton was on? meaning what ship he and his wife left Norway to sail back to his native Scotland?

All I can tell you is that my great grandfather was Carl Johan Beaton born 25/10/1872 in Stavanger . By the innoculation certificate he was 7.1/2 years old, on 7th July 1880.

I apologize, Jahn Beathon was my g-g-grandfather. They only information I have on him is that he was married to Regine Arneson unfortunately I dont have any dates of birth or any other information that is why I am having so much trouble with this side of my family.

Once again thank you for your help.
Best wishes Linda

Karl Johan Beaton Johannesen was confirmed April 17 1887 in Bakke subparish, Eiker, see #6
In this record is stated that he was inoculated for smallpox July 14 1780.
There seems to be a need for another translation of the inoculation certificate.

Hi,
dificult to find the ship your g,grandfather was on.
I have some additional informasion for you.

Farm Kopperud is located to Skotselv, a small population centre in Eiker parish.

Two roads, Kopperudsvingen (Koperud curve) and Kopperudveien (Kopperud road) is named after the farm, see here.

Bakke church was consecreated in 1883, the old church from 1802, a small wooden church demolished the same year was located a bit further south.

Linda -
There are websites that can help you with the Norwegian documents and many of the entered words that you find written on them.

The Norwegian census formats and many of the common abbreviations used on those documents -
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na0.html
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/census_abbreviations.html

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~norway/na20.html

A good long list of Norwegian words translated to English for us -
http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm

I have no website to offer for bad handwriting.

Hi everyone

I would just like to say thank you so much for your help. It has all been so useful. My mother is delighted as she always felt that I would never find any information. Norway Heritage - a very big thank you - keep up the good work. For someone who does not speak any Norwegian you have made life a lot easier. The innoculation document that I have was actually translated by the Norwegian consulate here in Sydney many years ago. It is actually signed Stormo, the 14th July, 1880. M. Langelo

Once again thank you all and I hope you all have a lovely Christmas.

Best wishes Linda

just like the info in the baptismal record, you first posting in this topic was "7th July, 1880" and was not correct then.

Hi, resurrecting this very old post to say that I am the great granddaughter of one of Carl Johan’s sisters, Pauline. I have the family’s info from coming to Scotland onwards, but can’t work out how to find a birth record for Pauline? Her own notes say she was born on the 19th March 1882 in Eiker, but I’m not having any luck searching for her birth or baptism. Her name sometimes appears as Pouline, Pollie etc, Beaton or Beatton. Not sure if she would have gone by Johansdatter at that point?
