Alfred Heins' New York City naturalization record shows that he arrived in the US April 16, 1871, that he was born in Norway August 30, 1854, and that he was a dock builder.
In the records of the Norwegian Historical Data Centre I find one Alfred Hein, son of Nils Hein, but the birth year is 1852 in Oiestad. Would someone please check to see if the month and day are August 30?
I cannot locate a ship record or other records in Norway. Would appreciate any leads.

Alfred Hein was born in Ĝyestad August 30, bap. Oct. 10 1852, see #71.
Guess you alredy know.
I thought Hein was a farm name, actually it was a family name.
Alfred, living in Strandstedet, Strĝmmen school district, Ĝyestad, with his parents and a sister Johanne and a brother Anton, occ. seaman, in 1865.
His father Nils Hein owned the house and was a seaman.

When Alfred was baptized his father was Skreddermester (Tailor). This was also his occupation when he Nils Christian Hein married Sara Authenrich Oct 3 1833, see #36 Nils Christians father was merchant Nils Hein.
Sara was born July 31 1814 in Kristiansand, her parents were Sailor Wilhelm Henrich Authenrich and Anna Christiansdatter, see 9th record on right page.
The baptismal record for Nils Christians is #23
He had an older brother Johan Christian, see #2

The parents married in Kristiansand town on Oct. 3. 1833.
Nils Hein was Nils Christan Hein and Sara Hein was born Sara Authenrich, he was from Arendal town and she from Kristiansand.

Nils Heyn and Wilhelm Henrich Autenrich, see bottom left page #36.

Sara Autenrich was born in Kristiansand July 31. bap. August 19. 1814 to Wilhelm Henrich Autenrich and Anne Christiansdatter, see right page 9 bap. from top here
Wilhelm Autrenrich was a seaman on Brig Alv, born in Copenhagen in Denmark, when he married Anne Cristiansdatter in Kristiansand Jan. 25. 1813, see right page 19 and 20 line from top here

The passenger lists from 1871 is not complete.
Arriving New York April 16. is early for an emigrants ship.
Could be he hired a cargo ship since several from his family were seamen?

Wow! What a lot of great information! Thank you so very much.
I wonder why he used the 1854 birth year. Would his travel have been cheaper? He used it in New York also, but the 1910 US census shows 1852. The name always has an s at the end in the US. My mother-in-law used Hines for her maiden name, but we found her birth record used Heins.
I was trying to find Alfred's emigration information from Norway. He shows up on Canadian records in 1871 in Ontario. Did Norway keep exit records like some other countries? |

Donna, do you know the name of the ship Alfred Heins´arrived Canada April 1871?
I still think he arrived on a cargo ship (his brother Anton was a seaman)
Guess the date 1854 was a wrongspelling, not unusual.
Hein; Heins, Hines.
Hein and Hine is pronounced almost identically in Norway.
The Arendal dialect is pronounced something different from written language, can be the English Hines was the most similar.
Both Alfred and Hein is a rare name in Norway, espesially the combination Alfred Hein/Heins, I asssume he was the only Alfred Hein at that time in Norway.

There are several books called "Bygdbĝker" from Ĝyestad with information about the farms and the people who lived there, see down page for Arendal kommune (municipality), see here.
Could be Alfred or the Hein family is mentioned there.
Strandstedet (Beach area) where they lived in 1865 is now a part of Arendal town.
