I am looking for my Great Grandfather.
He was born December 17, 1837 in Norway (possibly in
Hordeland). He emigrated to Kendall County, Illinois in America
in 1858. He changed his name to Thomas Peterson before
1880. He married Britha Tørrisdtr Lunde in 1874 and died
July 15, 1914 in Ford County, Illinois.
He received letters from Norway with references in the headings
to Svalland, Hetland, and Indbjoe. I only have bits and pieces
of information as someone in our family kept the envelopes
with the postmarks and stamps.
Thank you for anything you can locate.
Kindest regards,
James L. Nelson

Yes it is! And I'm trying to find something to trace him back to Norway (where he was from, etc.). I have found all of my other
Great Grandfathers but I knew the farm / city / county they were from. I know I haven't given you much to go on, but anything you
can find of his life in Norway would help immensely. Thank you so much. James

Hi,

If these are farm names, and it appears likely, there are places called Svalland, Indbjøe, and Hetland in Fjelberg parish in Hordaland fylke in the 1865 census transcriptions at Digitalarkivet.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

The date of birth dont correspond, but I have:
Torkeld Pedersen Svalland was born to Peder Torkeldsen and Gunild Tørrisdatter on Dec. 18. 1836 in Fjelberg, see #8

He emigrated from Svalland 1858, see right page #49, Bachelor Torkeld Pedersen Svalland

You mention that he changed his name before 1880. How do you happen to know that and do you know anything about what he was called before the name change. If he arrrived in the US in 1858 what was he called before the name change in 1880?

It is reasonable to think that Torkeld Pedersen, Svalland is the right one.
The parents Peder Torkeldsen and Gunla Tørrisdatter married April 7 1837, see #6.
In 1840 they baptized Torkeld (Thomas) brother Peder, born July 25, see #49.
Anna Serinne was born Jan 22 1844, see #14, and Johannes was born Jan 3 1847, see
#4

Lyndal40,

The name change idea comes f rom letters he received from Norway over the years and how they were addressed to him. They started
out addressed to Torkel Trondahauen, then Torkel Pederson, and then Thomas Peterson. So I'm not certain he legally changed his name just
that he got letters addressed to him under different names. Thank you. James

Kåarto,
I think you are right because the birth date I have might be wrong. This definitely sounds worth following up. Thank you. James

I cannot thank you both enough!! You are all so helpful!!

I think we are approaching.
Indbjoe as you mentioned, current Innbjoa, is located a bit south from Utbjoa mentioned further down in todays Ølen municipality which was split from Fjelberg 1916.

It´s a question of where the picture is taken.
Down on the page its written:

........read what Svein Svalland writes:- This knows a Svalland boy. The photo is taken at Utbjoa south of the chapel by the road to Trondahaugen........, see here

There are so many evidences that we are on the right place James

I wonder if Trondahaugen was a local name on one of the seven Svalland farms since Trondahaugen is not mentioned in neither the 1801-1865 and 1900 census.

Torchel Tollevsen, Svalland and Guri Pedersdatter, Udbioe were married June 11 1807, see 4th couple on right page.

Trondahaugen still exist at Utbjoa in Ølen municipality, need a better map tomorrow so this will do for tonight, I just want you to see in what part of the County Torkel was born.

South in this map for Hordaland County you will find Ølen and a road by the seashore which seems to stop by a ferry pier.
A local road continue and turns left at the headland where the Svalland farms and Trondahaugen is located.

James,
enter this map, write UTBJOA and click on SØK, enter A (Utbjoa Armering og Sveis), zoom out twice and enter the left road that goes north (zoom in twice), change to FOTO and watchTrondahaugen.

It seems like the houses are demolished

One my ancestral lines came from Ølen also. They emigrated just a few years earlier and first stopped in the general area of Kendall Co. ILL, later most continuing to migrate west into central Iowa.

There is a 4 volume set of bygdebøker for Ølen, the last two of the series finished about 2001. I have that book set on my current "wish list" and have used them when I visited the Salt Lake City Family History Library. (The books are numbered as 1A, 1B, 2, and 3 -- expect to find "Svolland" farm in book no. 3. )

For the time period when your Torkil would have been recorded in local parish church records expect to find him recorded in the Fjelberg books and often annotated as "Aalunds annex". It is common to find family links also extending into nearby Skaanevik, Hordaland.

In recent years Ølen was transferred to Rogaland fylke, rather than Hordaland and then most recently was merged with Vindafjord area of Rogaland. I have stubbornly refused to change all the location references in my own family history research files since I still find the old records by using the old location.
