I am searching for the passenger list or ship for Synneva Andersdatter (Tossen/Tyssen) who according to church parish records emigrated in March 1873 from Evanger, Voss, Hordaland? The oral history says she immigrated with her sister Ingeborg and died at sea. The parish emigration record for Ingeborg Andersdatter Tossen is given as May 1875? A contradiction is a marriage date for Ingeborg of 1871 in Norway to John Stromme which would of course make her last name Stromme? Does anyone know if there is a record of those who died at sea - not all passenger lists give this information?

Thanks for any help.

One should have find the ship including the passengerlist to confirm that.
Could not find Synnevas sister Ingeborg ( Ingebjørg acc the 1865 census) or her husband.

Synneva Andersdatter Thøsen (Tossen-Tyssen) em. record is on the right page #8

Was John Stromme from Voss? Could not find any Stromme farm in Voss neither in the 1865 or -75 census for Voss.

Could it be John Strømme?

There were 4 Strømme farms with 8 John´s in Haus municipality acc. the 1865 census , same County, Hordaland, west not fare from Voss

Yes, I am sure it is John Strømme and he may have immigrated before Ingeborg. They may have married in the US. I have been searching for the passenger list with no luck - she may have died on the passage to Liverpool?

I found the parish records of Synneva's birth and emigration 1873. I have also found Ingeborg's birth and emigration but the year is 1875. Could the parish records be a different year than the actual emigration? Oral history says they came together but I am doubting that. I have found Ingeborg in the US censuses and the year of immigration is given as 1875.

I will continue to search.
Thanks for the reply.

The 1910 U.S. Census lists John M. immigration as 1872, and Ingeborg's as 1876. They have been married for 36 years.
They were living at Stanley County, Bridges Creek, SD.

What Parish did you find Ingeborg's emigration? 1975 was missing for Voss.

Persons leaving from the Evanger or Voss area would probably sail from the nearby port of Bergen. Bergen emigration records really don't reliably start until about half way through 1874. Therefore you cannot expect to find 1873 records for that port. You might be able to find a record at the American or Canadian port of arrival. I have seen a arrival passenger manifest that had names of persons who died enroute - but do not think that was a standard practice.

If Ingeborg Andersdatter married 1871 in Voss, Norway to a John (patronymic unknown) Strømme she would NOT change her name until she left Norway. She would probably then use an American style married name, his patronymic or farm name would be likely.

In the 1900 US Census John"s year of immigration is listed as 1871, making the above listing a better match. It also gives his birth date as April 1850. It also states that they were married in 1876 and that Ingeborg immigrated in 1875 and was born in Dec 1853.

Here is a candidate for Ingaborg Andersdatter. She is travelling with a group with destination of the group listed as Red Wing, Minnesota.

Name: Ingeborg Anderson
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Estimated birth year: abt 1853
Date of Arrival: 9 May 1875
Vessel: Polynesian
Search Ship Database: View the 'Polynesian' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England; Londonderry, Ireland

If you could provide a link to the emmigration data on Ingaborg from 1875 perhaps we could match some of the other people listed with Ingaborgs group on the ship with those from the emmigration list.

the estimated birth year for Ingeborg is 1 year off, if the same is true for John, a good candidate is #64 he was born April 27 1849.
his parents were Mons Johannesen and Brynilde Andersdatter, Strømme.

Here is an interesting connection.. Here is an John Stromme in 1875 Minnesota State and Territorial Census living in Goodhue County. The city that Ingaborg is listed as travelling to Red Wing, Minnesota is the county seat of Goodhue County. Could John and Ingaborg met and married here and then moved to South Dakota.

Name: John Stromme
Census Date: 1 May 1875
County: Goodhue
Locality: Wanamingo
Birth Location: Norway
Gender: Male
Estimated birth year: abt 1849
Race: White
Father's Birth Location: Norway
Mother's Birth Location: Norway

In the link posted by Einar for Ingeborg leaving for America the person listed just above Ingeborg at #4 is a Anna Olsdatter born 1849 In the Ancestry.com data for the Polynesian arriving 1875, the person directly below Ingaborg is A Olsdatter. Not a perfect match for brith years but close.

Name: A Olestadder
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Estimated birth year: abt 1852
Date of Arrival: 9 May 1875
Vessel: Polynesian
