The confirmation record for Niels is #28. He does not seem to be in Land at the 1865 census. No other info readily available.

Hi. The em. records for Søndre land are incomplete. There is no reason to believe that the em. on July 1. 1867 is incorrect.
Meanwhile I have some add. information for you.
On Sørbergshagen 1875 Even Johannesen and Inger Mathea lived with 4 children; Nils 1862, Johan 1864, Karoline 1866 and Marthe Marie 1868. I believe they all emigrated to America. They are not recorded in the em. records for Søndre Land. I cannot find them in the 1900 census for Søndre Land.
Nils and Johan on ship Angelo 1882. Angelo sailed from Oslo to Hull in England, dest Willmar (Minn.?) see here
Karoline and Martha on ship Rollo 1884 from Oslo to Hull, England, dest Chicago, tickets were prepaid, link
Hov (Hoff) church from 1781 by the shore of Lake Randsfjorden, here
Hov means that there was an ancient pagan cult place there before Christainity came to Norway ab. 1000 AC. Not to offend the old gods were churches for safety build on the same places.

Em. route from Søndre land to Oslo.
The shortest route was via Gjøvik. From Gjøvik on paddle steamer Skibladner (route opened August 1856) to Eidvoll and on train to Oslo (railroad opened 1854)
A curiosity: Sørbergshagen was a subfarm under Søberg. No info. reg. what happened with Sørbergshagen after Even Johannesen or his children.
Mai 25. 1928 Deed (property) from owner Nils . P. Sørberg to Svein P. Sørberg for 9000 Kroner . Pre-emption for the owner of farm nr 1 (Sørberg)
Last column: July 10. 1936 Free support, legal right, for the owners (if the farm was sold) on Søbergshagen for value of 1200 kroner a year for Per Sørberg and wife Klara Sørberg as long as they lived and for the two daughters Aslaug and Sigrid as long as they were unmarried, link.

The last em. ship from Oslo 1867 was Chapman July 6 to Canada.
3 other options; They sailed on a cargo ship to America or em. via Gothenburg in Sweden. Some em. did that, by boat from Oslo to Sweden if the ship was fully subcribed. There were also other em. ports in Norway.

Here is an interesting family. I found a Marte arriving in 1867 in Quebec. She was born abt 1839. She appears to be travelling with her children Johannes Johansen age 3 and Christin age 6/12. Her name is listed as Marte Christiansdtr age 28 on the original manifest. It appears they are all travilling with a Johan Nordvoll ? age 34. Information found in Ancestry.com.
Name: Marte Christiansdtt Age: 28 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839 Date of Arrival: 1867 Vessel: Refondo Search Ship Database: View the 'Refondo' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec
Might be worth a closer look. |

Just to complete the information here is the record on the Johan. It is a long shot but the family is so close to yours even tho the name is Nordvoll, that I thought it was worth posting.
Name: Johan Nordvöll Age: 34 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833 Date of Arrival: 1867 Vessel: Refondo Search Ship Database: View the 'Refondo' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec

Good find Anton! See 406-409 Refondo the family were living at Nordberg (Norvøll) when the children were born, both children have the right age, Christine has become Christian - not uncommon to mix up the gender.

Very interesting info Anton.
Here is a Refondo journey from Gjøvik April 1867 where Lake Mjøsa was covered with ice. In July paddle steamer Skibladner was on the water and brought you to Eidsvoll. A child from Land died on the journey. Link

Thanks once again....I really believe these are my people. Both children died on the journey to America. Old story is that when Kristine died Marte wrapped her in a fine linen tablecloth and she was buried at sea. Marte was also very seasick. The arrival date is only off by one day and they were coming to Wisconsin which is where they settled. |

After further consideration, I really believe these have to be my ancestors...Is this enough information to submit a change or addition to the original information.?.. If possible I would like to do just that. |

I also believe this is your family Glenn. The names correspond well, variyng spellings were normal. They traveled via Gjøvik but April was to early for Skibladner which still sails on Mjøsa.

So, is it then possible to make changes or additions to the original information?. I have relatives at Hov near Gjovik today, so they could certainly have traveled via Gjovik, most likely by a different mode of transportation. You people are GREAT...you have been able to supply me with an amazing amount of information which answers a lot of questions. I remember an elderly Uncle talking about what a terrible voyage they had. |
