I am a member of a group of 4 who are researching our ancestors; the Gaard family from Talgje, Finnøy, Rogaland, Norway. We are having a problem understanding information about Jonas Gaard, son of Sjur Larson and Ingeborg Oddsdatter. He is the brother of our g-g-grandparents (Rakel, Severt and Louis). We have a parish birth record for Jonas for 19 Jun 1848 in Randaberg, Hetland, Rogaland, Norway. It lists the father as Sivert Larsen - Is this the same person as Sjur Larsen. Then we find a parish emigration record for Jonas for 24 Aug 1869 which lists his name as Jonas Sjursen Gaard age 21 going to North America. Another place it shows him on a Canadian Passenger List as Jonas Sivertsen Gaard arriving on the ship Heros in Quebec, Canada in Jun 1869 at age 20. Then there is another Canadian Passenger List showing Jonas Sjursen arriving in Quebec on 21 Jun 1874 at age 26. Are there any records to help us with correct information.
We appreciate any help you can give us.

Yes, most of your statements looks ok.
¤ Jonas Gaard, son of Sjur Larson and Ingeborg Oddsdatter Yes
¤ Brother of our g-g-grandparents (Rakel, Severt and Louis). Yes
¤ Parish birth record for Jonas for 19 Jun 1848 in Randaberg, Hetland, Rogaland, Norway. Yes
¤ It lists the father as Sivert Larsen. Is this the same person as Sjur Larsen? Yes
¤ Parish emigration record for Jonas for 24 Aug 1869 which lists his name as Jonas Sjursen Gaard age 21 going to North America. Yes
¤ Canadian Passenger List as Jonas Sivertsen Gaard arriving on the ship Heros in Quebec, Canada in Jun 1869 at age 20. Yes
¤ Canadian Passenger List showing Jonas Sjursen arriving in Quebec on 21 Jun 1874 at age 26. Guess no. Could this be a namesake?

Here he is in census-1865 for Gaard farm in Finnøy parish.
Emigration records shows him leaving the Parish in 1869.

Sivert and Sjur can sometimes be equal name. The father is a widower in 1865.

Sjur Larsen was born in Fjelberg, todays Kvinnherad
The marriage record for Sjur Larsen and Ingebord Aadsdatter in Randaberg June 19. 1842 confirms that, see #4

Sjur Larsson and Ingeborg Oddsdtr also had a son name Laurits in June 1859 while they resided on the Ask farm in Rennesøy. Note that the mother's name is listed wrongly on that birth record.

Sjur's birth farm of Dørheim in Fjelberg was located in what they then called Aalund annex - but which was later separated from Fjelberg and was called Ølen.

Thank you for helping us out BUT we have more questions! We have found that Tollak moved to Talgje in 1865 and that Ingeborg apparently died before the move. But in the parish reports it does not list Rakel, Elen or Jonas. Is there a parish record that would show they moved to Talgje earlier as they would have been old enough to work outside the home. Also one of my "partners" has found that Jonas was confirmed in 1862 in Talgje. How is that possible if the family moved to Talgje in 1865? Also, is there a passenger list for the Brødrene in 1874 that show Tollak and Rakel as passengers? (I haven't been able to find the ship Brødrene on any web sites.) Also we can't find when Sivert Sjurson Gaard or Johan Sjurson Gaard came to America or the ship on which they were passengers. Does the parish records document when they came to America? Thank you for any help you can give us. We are really passionate about putting this family history together!

Sjur/Siur and Ingeborg with 4 children left Ask in Rennesøy and settled on Gaard "For at bo paa et brug i Gaard" in Talgje/Finnøy parish April 1865, see 1. page #3

Ingeborg died before 1866 when Widower Sjur Larsen Dørem-Gaard married Anna Martha Eriksdatter from Alvestad in Tysvær on July 18. 1866, see #8

Off the record:

There are two Talgje islands in Finnøy municipality, Northern and Southern (Sør) Talgje.
Gaard is located to Sør (Southern) Talgje
Talgje church b. ab. 1100 was build on Gaard land.
Gaard was in the middleage the largest farm on Sør-Talgje and was owed by Baron Gaute Erlingsson 1235-88, one of king Magnus V Lagabøte Håkonsson´s most important advicers.

View of Sør Talgje, Gaard (not marked) is south-east on map between the bay and the road which appears after zooming out twice.

Wow! Thanks for the new info. It is so difficult for me to read the parish records. Is there any record of Johan and Sivert Gaard's date of departure for America? Would there be any record when Rakel, Elen and Jonas went to Talge? Again, many thanks!
