I am looking for the birth record of my great grandmother and the names of her parents. She was born in 1858, possibly April. She lived in Holmestrand as far as i can tell but I don't know whether she was born there. Her father was a sea man, possibly a ship's captain, who died at sea. Her mother remarried. Elise sailed on the Friedeberg from Hamburg to New Zealand in 1872. Her age on the ship list was given as 18 years but this does not fit with the birth date on her grave stone. We suspect she may have falsified her age to be allowed on the ship. She married in NZ in 1873, oddly her maiden name on the marriage certificate is given as Gundersen! Her husband was Robert Cullen. Her sisters emigrated to the USA.
I have tried the 1865 Census with no luck and don't know where to go from here. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sisters? What were their names? Older or younger than Elise?

The 1865 census has the following: #2016

Looks like there could be a match. The age of this Elise is given as 13, so she was probably born about 1853.

Thank you so much Les. I think you have found them for me. Elise gave my grandmother the second name Josephine and one of her sons was Frederick, another had Elias as 2nd name. It makes more sense for her to be older than we thought, other wise she would have married at 15 which I think was illegal here.
I can't understand why the younger 2 children are Deres son and daughter as there is no Deres in the household. They would be the chilldren of the 2nd husband but can't understand the name. Should learn some Norwegian!
Grateful thanks.

She was born April 8 1854, see #160 parents sailor Elias Frederiksen and Petronelle Andersdatter, S. Braarød.
Elias Frederiksens wife in the 1865 census, Ragnild Larsdatter, is his second wife.
Elise Maries older sister Josephine was born June 8 1851, see #151. She might have been the sister who emigrated to USA.

I'm overcome with all this help, thank you. I can't read the pages in the link you provided Elbache, is it a parish record or a census? Do you think Petronelle died or were they divorced? This is a good example of how stories passed down through families are often wrong. We were told her father had died and the girls didn't like the stepfather.
Yes, I must now try to find Josephine in the USA.......or perhaps that is a story too.
Regards, Philippa

The links in my posting is to parish records (baptism, marriage and death.)
If you need help in reading the handwriting please ask.

Hello. I have been in contact with you earlier? My name is Nils Daniel Nyberg. My great-great- grandfather was named Elias Frederiksen. He was born in 1817 in Tossene, Göteborg and Bohus, Sweden. The parish registers of that era were destroyed in the fire. He married Petronelle Andersdatter 15 August 1841 in Holmestrand, Vestfold, Norway. Petronelle died 8 May 1857. Elias married so my great-great-grandmother Ragnild Larsdatter 17 February 1859. My great-grandmother, Leonore, was born 14 October 1859. Her sister, Elise Marie, was born April 8, 1854 in Horten, Vestfold, Norway and baptized on July 2 in Borre, Vestfold, Norway. http://www.123hjemmeside.no/familiennyberg/

Dear Philippa. I'm afraid we have not found the right Elise. When I look at the ship lists, it appears that she travels with a sister Ingeborg 24 years old, but I do not know anything about a sister Ingeborg. I think we have to look for her elsewhere. What it says on her tombstone?
Love,
Nils Daniel Nyberg
