I am new to this, so please bear with me, I know that my Great-grandfather Hans Johnson was born in Trogstad July 29, 1863, his father was Hans Kristian Johnson born 1833, not sure where. I have tried going through the sites listed but am not having any luck with on-line translators. Any and all suggestions would be helpful & appreciated.
Hans Kristian Johnson was married to Karen Marie Hansdatter, Born 1833
Hans Johnson was married to Thora Braaten, Born August 29, 1874, They were married in 1892 in Waldcott, ND
I have fairly good records for the family in the US. It all stops with Hans Kristian in Norway.
Thank you, Tom Johnson

No Hans Johnsen born July 29 in the parish register for Trøgstad.
Where does this info come from, including the name and birth year for his parents?

Hi,

Have your searched for just a farm with the name Trogstad (or Trøgstad or other combination) in the 1865 census transcriptions online, rather than just in a parish of that name?

Here is one for instance:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f60235&gardpostnr=3&merk=3#ovre

One other item, if this family followed the traditional Norwegian naming pattern, your Hans would have been a Hanson not Johnson in Norway since his father's name was Hans.

Here is another possible from the Kristiania emigrants list at the digitalarkivet:

1875 404 15 173b 29.04.1875 30.04.1875 Hans Jens. Trøgstad ug Arbeidsm. m 25 Nannestad Præst. Rushford Minnesotta Henderson Brothers Hero Amerikaner

It will help if you can share a little more information on Hans. For example you mention that he was married to Thora in North Dakota in 1892, but did he continue to live there or is this him in Orgeon in 1900 US Census. If it is him it gives us some informatin on his date of immigration.

Hi.
Jensen could be changed to Johnsen in USA?

Your Hans Johnsen was bap. Hans Hansen in Norway (Norwegian traditional naming).

Perhaps Trostad was changed to Trogstad in USA, or more likely since there was no Trostad /Trostadhøiden farms in the 1865 census for Østre Toten, Trostad (Trostadhøiden) in Hans birth record belove was a wrongspelling for Trogstad?

Except for Jensen and Trostad the following names and date correspond.

I have a possible candidate for you born on farm Trostadhøiden July 29. 1863 bap. Nov. 1 in Østre Toten parish, Oppland County. Parents: Hans Jensen and Karen Hansdtr, see #197

Add. info:
There were 4 Trogstad farms in Østre Toten in 1865.

Karen Hansdatter was Karen Marie Hansdtr and Hans Jensen was Hans Kristian Jensen, he was from farm Skramstad in Østre Toten and she from Hurdal parish, Akershus County, they married in Hurdal April 22. 1857, see#11

Acc. the 1865 census for Østre Toten Hans had two brothers, Martin age 8 and Julius age 6, living as renters in Fjeldhaug brick works.

When I was growing up I was told that our family name had been changed to Johnson from Scrumstad. When I got older I was told that wasn't true but could never figure out where Scrumstad or Skramstad had come from, now I think I do.
I don't want to misspell your name but I'm still trying to figure how to get my keyboard to be smarter than me. Thanks again
