The street number in 1801 was House No. 198 A, present Festningsgata 6 (Fortress street 6)
It`s the red house, your family is mentioned in "Folketellingen" the 1801 census living there, see here

Thank you. I should have seen females on one side and males on the other!

Now that we know she is the right person the old letter is making more sense. It says that Karen Brynildsdatter was:
" a daughter of Brynild Asbjørnsen Bakke and wife Inger Andersdatter Brække. and was baptized 08/31/1760". So far the dates have not been all accurate. I have looked for her bapt record but did not find it yet.

The letter mentions Martha Torgalsdatter and says she married "merchant Bigum" and had a daughter "Sorin" who married a butcher named Ole Andersen.
now I know who she was - and can find out more on her side of the family too!

Not often one can see the house where onces ancestors lived 200 years ago.

Brynild Asbjørnsen born in Idd parish 1735, bap. June 12.
: 12 juny bap. Asbiørn Brynildsen and Kari Svendsdatters "barn" child Named Brynil

Brynild Asbjørnsen died on Øvre? Backe April 17. 1785, age 48 (as "usual" the age dont correspond).
Rh down under 1785 #19

All christian ceremonies took place in Idd church from ca 1100

Asbjørn Brynildsen and Kari Svendsdatter married in Idd church June. 24. 1725.
Samme dag (Same day as above, 24 jun:) Asbiørn Brynildsen and Kari Svendsdatter Copulerede (Married)

Seems like you still have family on Bakke in Halden !!

The info above comes from a Norwegian family tree.
I just wanted to check a few records before I posted it here

To find the Norwegian family tree was a combination of luck and long experience in searching for names.

A recurrent problem is to spell old names correctly.
