My great grandmother had a sponsor who paid her costs for her when she came to America in 1872. I have not been able to locate her exit information from Norway. Does anyone know how to find out who the sponsor was? I emailed the ship lines in Glasgow - actually the National Archives - and they were unable to provide any info. Suggested I try to get it from the US side. Thanks, Marlene

Sometimes the original manifest for the ship carrying the passengers from England to the US does have this information. Have you found an immigration record for the person. I wil look for you on Ancestry.com but I will need to know the name of the person. It also helps to know the persons birth year.

The passenger list shows her name to be Kari Hanson. Her father was Guttorm Hanson. Don't know why she didn't use Kari Guttormsdatter? She was born 11 Sep 1842 in Gran, Oppland, Norway. She departed Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland and arrived in NY 18 Oct 1872. I have looked and looked and haven't found the immigration record yet.

Have you exhausted the passenger manifests that are available on microfilm and maintained by the US National Archives? The same records are copied to microfilm more easily available through any LDS Family History Center.

Kari Guttormsdatter (28 yrs old, from farm "Greftegrefseje) left from Jevnaker, Oppland in 1869 stating her intended destination as Olso/Kristiania.

At the 1865 census Kari Guttormsdatter was with her parents at Skjervetangen
She actually moved out of Jevnaker in 1866, but it was recorded in 1869 see 1.

Here is what Ancestry.com has on a likely candidate.

Name: Kari Hansen
Arrival Date: 18 Oct 1872
Estimated birth year: abt 1842
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Glasgow, Scotland and Moville, Ireland
Destination: United States of America
Place of Origin: Norway
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian
Ship Name: Anglia
Search Ship Database: Search the Anglia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York

Unfortunately the original manifest is very sparse containing only her name , age and ethnicity

Hi,

Usually the sponsors were relatives already in America or were from the same area as the person being sponsored. Often the first place of employment once they got to America was with the sponsor and designed to pay off the ticket. Any family memory about her employment history?

Thank all of you who have helped me with this. I do not know anything about her employmnent history. She married Johannes Bakman sometime after she arrived in America (1872) but I believe before Jan. 1874 when their first child was born in Polk County, Wisconsin. I have a cousin in Minnesota that I have only met once that I believe may have some clues for me. I will continue to try to get info. from him.
Thank again.
