Hello everyone.

I have a relative coming form the Hjardahl area, Sauland to be exact, with the last name Snipprud (that may be a Americanized version of the spelling).

This doesn't fall with in the a traditional way of naming. How can that be?

And I see the suffix "rud" on many town names. Does "rud" have a meaning?

Hi,
census-1865 shows a farm called Sneprud in Hjartdal, Telemark.

Ah, thanks.

I wasn't having any luck with the name the way Grandmother had wrote it.

The name Rud means a clearing in the forest.

Thanks Hopkins

I figured it was a farm name, but I wasn't finding it in my usual research sites, so I had to ask. Alas, it was the spelling.

Even with that, Sneprud must have been a small farm, or could it have been taken over by the town of Sauland? I could not see it in the land registry or in other census years.
