I have hit a wall looking for Andrew Andersen b. Sept 1844 or 47, and his wife Gunhild b. 1849. According to US census records they arrived in the US about 1886. They have a daughter, Gertrude born in Brooklyn in Sept of 1886. 2 children born in Norway - Mathilda b. 1871 and Axel b. 1877.
Not sure what direction to look in for more info on them. I can't locate any immigration records for them to narrow down where in Norway to look for them.
Thanks for any advice! |

Yes, here is their arrival into New York, first for Axel as this is about the only Axel Andersen that I can find in Ancestry.com that even comes close to fitting the criteria.
Name: Axel Andersen Arrival Date: 16 May 1887 Birth Year: abt 1877 Age: 10 Gender: Male Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Island

Here is the data on Olene travelling with Amalie 20, Axel 10, Peder and Gunhild whose ages are difficult to read in the original manifest.
Name: Olene Andersen Arrival Date: 16 May 1887 Birth Year: abt 1845 Age: 42 Gender: Female Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian Place of Origin: Norway Port of Departure: Copenhagen, Denmark Destination: United States of America Port of Arrival: New York Port Arrival State: New York Port Arrival Country: United States Ship Name: Island
Looking at the 1900 US Census shows a birthdate for Gertude of Sep 1886 |

I don't know if they ever went back to Norway. While they lived in Brooklyn that does not seem to be the right address. All this info will give me someplace to start to search. Hopefully I will find something! Thanks everyone for your help. |

Andrew Andersen could have immigrated separately and earlier than the rest of the family, looking at the three US Census
1900 US Census immigrated 1880 or 1884 (Looking at the orginal census, I think the year is 1880 but 1884 agrees with years in US) 1910 US Census immigrated 1885 (Unfortunately does not agree with the other two) 1920 US Census immigrated 1880 (Again I think the year is best read as 1880 and he is naturalized in 1885)
Gunhiid
1900 US Census 1886 (agrees with years in US) 1910 US Census 1887 1920 US Census (unfortunately already deceased)
Just something to ponder

Hi,
I suppose that you have already looked at the Italian Genealogical Group website New York Death index. On the off chance that you haven't here is a Gunhild Andersen d. 1910-1920:
Surname Given Name Age Month Day Year Certificate Number County Soundex Andersen Gunhild 60 y Jan 29 1911 2100 Kings A536
Age is about right, is Kings county the right place?

Thanks. I will spend some time trying to use these clues and see where they takes me. Yes that is Gunhild's death record but Gunhild and Andrew's death records offer no clues as to their parents or where they came from other than Norway.
I know I just have to turn over that right rock and it will all come together! Thanks for the info.

Hi,
Have you checked the WWI draft registration database for the son Axel? He is just on the edge of the age limitation (too old in 1917-1918) but sometimes a more exact birthplace is given in it than just Norway... What became of Mathilda?

I was just checking for draft registrations! There is one he could be but there is no image so there is no birthplace.
Mathilda married Petter Iversen, they lived in Brooklyn also. They are buried with Gunhild and Andrew in Greenwood cemetery in Brooklyn.
thanks

Hi,
Here is the Gunhild Marie from an earlier post marriage to somebody but not Andrew (Anders) Anderson, so mitigates against her a bit:
Source information: Vest-Agder county, Halse, Parish register (official) nr. A 14 (1859-1872), Marriage records 1870, page 399, #16. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=885&idx_id=885&uid=ny&idx_side=-401 Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060106020802.jpg So you have exercised "due diligence" on each of the children and exhausted records on them?
The Andrew / Gunhild couple traveling in 1906, if already naturalized may have applied for a passport and there is a database of some of those from New York on Ancestry.
Did the family belong to a Norwegian Lutheran church in the US?
Hilsen, Jackie M.

Thanks - I am going back thru each of the children now trying to make sure I have checked everything. I don't see where Gunhild ever was naturalized on the census records, only Andrew.
I do know the church they went to in Brooklyn so that might be a place to write for more information.
I appreciate all the suggestions!
