Johannes Knudson Bondhus b. April 12. 1823 and Margrete Larsdatter b. May 20. or 26.1835, married November 18. 1857, had their first child Knud b. Mars 5. 1857, all born Kvinnherad , Norway, no records about them after 1860.
Next time they appeared in church records for West Lisbon Lutern, Kendall Co. Ill. Johannes Knudson and Margrete Larson baptizted 4 children. Ragnille July 14. 1864, Knud july 12. 1865, Ragnille Tomine May 4. 1867 and Johannes June 5. 1870. So far no sign about them in any census in Ill.
I have the info that a widow Margrette Knutson moved from Ill. and homesteaded at Hopper Twp. Aurora Co. SD, about 1883. It seems that a John Knutson b. ill June 1871 was landowner at the same farm in 1909. I know it wery well could be a wild one. Do anyone have any info. Regads Magnar.

I think that this is your Martha in 1880. Being listed under M. makes it very hard to locate. Esmen Illinois and Lisbon Illinois are only about 50 miles apart. Some of the names of the children have been americanized and husband John must be deceased. 1880 US Census.

| Hi, And thank you very much to both. I have the info that Margarett in Aurora was mother to 7 children. The one who was born in Norway could have died and was not include. It was a Hans Hanson who was a godparent to one of the child born in Ill.Wonder if he lived in the neighbourhood, again thank you. Magnar. |

There is a Family Tree on Ancestry.com for the Johnie Knutson listed above. Unfortunately no parents are given for him in this Family Tree.
The tree is called the Tastad/Kupchick Family Tree probably belonging to Bonnie Kupchick. You can google Tastad/Kupchick and find some of her postings and probably find a way to contact her.

Continuing to search the Family Tree part of Ancestry.com turns up a Annie Margarite Knutson born 23 Mar 1869 in Illinois, in the Family Tree belonging to Ashleyej008. Again as
in the previous Family Tree there is no parents listed. However in the 1900 US Census she is married to John K Johnson and living in Mt. Vernon, South Dakota. Mt Vernon, South Dakota is only 7 miles from Hopper where John Knutson is living in 1900. Note up in the 1880 US Census there is a Annie age 11 thus her birth year would have been 1869. Perhaps the same.

Here is the best fit that I could find for the family in the 1870 US Census from Ancestry.com. The ages are a little off and the family only works if the names John and Knud are switched. Nettle Creek is only 8 miles from Lisbon so that fits really well.

Hi, And thank you, you have been working while I slept. In Nettle Creek, Grundy, Ill I know of many from this community who settled there, so why not. I really do appreciate what you have done for me. My great grand uncle Johannes Knutson Bondhus has been more or less a nightmare. Have throwed away my searching many times.
I faund a Johannes Knutson participated in a congregation meeting 1861 at Calamus, Olive Twp, Clinton Co. Iowa. There was an old settlement of people from Kvinnherad. Put works to others and my self what I do think was a blind track. Luckily I came across the church records of the old Norwegian Church in Lisbon. Regards Magnar.

I'm interested to know HOW and WHERE you came across the church records of the Lisbon congregation. I've been searching for information in that area for quite a few years. If I follow your footsteps to those records I might solve a few mysteries of my own.
A group of Norwegians from Kvinnherad were in Clinton Co. Iowa - at least for a time. Some went on later to the north-central part of that state and were in Hamilton, Webster, Wright and Humboldt Counties of Iowa. Others took their western migration on to the Dakota territories.
The 1900 US census for Aurora Co. SD also shows a Knut Knutson, born Illinois in 1865. Perhaps the older brother to John. |
