On the 20 May 1881 sailing of the Angelo from Christiania to Hull, there is a column on the emigrant list titled "Permission." The name after my ancestors' listing is T. Gloersen. Can anybody tell me what or who is this idea of "permission"?

Usually that would be a remark indicating that the person had a permission from the military to leave.

Thanks, Borge. Would that be the name of the individual who actually gave him permission? Military man from his area?

"Gløersen" appears in the Permission column of that particular database at least 1302 times for men from many different parts of Norway. It is doubtful that "Gløersen" would be from the same area as your unnamed ancestor.
