As an aside, a bio of Sheriff Martin:
BOOK - HISTORY OF WINONA COUNTY, MN., VOL 1 & 2, PUBLISHED IN 1913. "John Francis Martin was born in Vesoul, France, on November 26, 1824, son of John and Annie (Pagt) Martin. The father died when John F. was three years old, and when he was ten years old he was brought to American by his mother, who had married John Mosher. After a voyage of thirty-six days they reached New York, and located near Mt. Eaton, in Linn county, Ohio, where the subject of this sketch remained until 1838, when he removed to Holmes county, Ohio. In 1840, he became a resident of Coshocton county, Ohio. He began life for himself at the early age of twelve years, and has since been dependent on his own resources. He first began clerking in a store, and was thus employed for about twelve years at Roscoe, Cleveland, and in Louisville. Attracted by the discovery of gold in California, in 1849, he started across the plains for the promised Eldorado. The party with which he made the trip went down the river to Cairo, Ill., and St. Louis, Mo., where they purchased outfits, shipping the same to Independence, Mo. They then started across the plains making the journey by way of old Ft. Kearney. They left home March 20, and on August 26, stopped at what is now Sacramento. Then Mr. Martin engaged in prospecting and mining until 1852, and his trip proved a very successful and pleasant one, he gaining a considerable portion of gold dust and also storing away in his mind many pleasant and interesting reminiscences. In 1852, Mr. Martin by way of the water route, returned to his old home. The trip consumed sixty-four days, but the boat was supplied with provisions for only thirty days. However, the vessel reached harbor in safety, and the subject of this sketch again made his way to Ohio, where he was once more employed as a salesman. The same year he went to Cleveland where he secured a position with a wholesale grocery house as a solicitor and adjustor, a position which he filled until 1854. Wishing to seek a home in the West he then removed to Iowa, and with the capital be had acquired purchased a tract of land of 500 acres near Iowa City, but made his home thereon only from June until October. He then sold out and in the winter of 1854 came to Winona. Locating at Richmond he purchased a tract of land of about 300 acres, securing the same, or the greater part of it, from the government. He laid out the village of Richmond in 1855, and immediately established a general store, which he carried on in connection with farming. He was thus engaged in business until 1860, when he removed to a farm in sections nine and sixteen, Pleasant Hill township, and established a general store at Ridgeway. In July, 1864, he became sutler of the Seventh Minnesota Volunteer Infantry and when the war was over he was discharged at Ft. Snelling, in August, 1865. Immediately after, he returned to his home and family, and engaged in farming which he carried on there until 1867, when he was elected sheriff of Winona county, on the Democrat ticket. For three successive terms he was chosen to that office. He was also appointed deputy United States Marshal, which position he held for five years. In 1873, after his term as sheriff had expired, he returned to his old home in Ohio, and visited many different parts of that country, traveling until 1875 when he took up his residence on a farm located on sections nine and sixteen, Pleasant Hill township. This farm contained 240 acres. There he gave his time and attention to general farming and stock raising and was recognized as one of the leading agriculturists in the community. His valuable place with its many improvements were indicative of his thrifty care and supervision. In 1891 he was appointed by the governor as notary public to serve for seven years. In politics he is a staunch Democrat, warmly advocating the principles of his party. In social relations he is a Mason, having attained the Knights Templar degree. In the various public offices he has filled he has discharged his duties with promptness and fidelity which have won for him high commendation and made him worthy the trust reposed in him. In business he has won success, owing to enterprise and careful management, and is now the possessor of a comfortable competence. On March 13, 1853, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Morrison, daughter of Zachariah and Marie (Butler) Morrison. Mrs. Martin was a native of Holmes county, Ohio, born July 4, 1832, one of six children. She died May 22, 1907."

Perhaps a great find Jackie. The ELCA record shows the name to be Oscar Martin Helmer and parents to be John Pedersen and Anne Johnson

I will take a rain check on responding to the Danish John Petersen proposal. Too early to draw conclusions.
Find-a-Grave memorials created by the descendant who first started this thread list Minnie as Minnie Peterson Lutz. Seemingly Peter J Lutz 1872-1953 was a second husband. In 1910 her father John age 60, born Norway, lives with the family. In 1920 Minnie's parents are listed born Norway, same as John in 1920 census with Florence):
1910 census John Peterson age 60, born Norway, immigrated 1880, naturalized John's daughter Anna Peterson 13 Minnie and husband Knute Olson b abt 1873 Norway link
1900census winona , minnie olson born south dakota isabell born 1899 minnesota 1920 census Minnie's parents listed as born Norway link
1930 census Minnie's father listed as born Norway, mother born Denmark link
1940 census link
Minnie death record, parents not named in this transcription: 1967
But where the children are in 1885 is a mystery. These Minnesota counties are at the southeast corner of Minnesota; maybe they are in Iowa or Wisconsin? or they were christened with different names, later changed by the Martins?

Now a little earlier on this page Jackie has several marriages posted. The one of John Pedersen and Anna Johnson fits the parents of Oscar Martin Helmer.

And Oscar Martin Helmer is the Elmer in the 1885 Census?
Helmer Peterson in the Minnesota, Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905 Name: Helmer Peterson Age: 4 Census Date: 1 May 1885 County: Fillmore Locality: Holt Birth Location: Minnesota Gender: Male Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881 Race: White LINE: 5 Roll: MNSC_25 |

I have not checked land records for John Peterson.
I would also like to add that I think it is possible that John Peterson and Anna did NOT get married in Fillmore county but MAY have married in Houston County. Rushford/Highland Prairie (where Elmer and Flossie were born) and Houston, MN are not that far away. Not sure where to look for marriage information in Houston County.
I am not sure where "Wilhelmine Nelsen" comes from either. I will add that I have a handwritten genealogy done by Edward Martin (Elmer's eldest son) and on the piece of paper, it states that Elmer's mother's name is either Anna Nielson or Nilson. Maybe we need to run some searches with those variations?
Thank you to everyone that has posted, I have definitely learned some new things, and I think we are making some headway on this.

Hi again. Quiet here. I haven't had a chance, but my next step, as someone trying to help, would be to review the records for Florence (Peterson) (Martin) Burke.
Here is a family tree on FamilySearch free website. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L2QH-WCM
It lists some census records for her. For example, 1920 census, which includes John Peterson: 1920
The census includes a statement about where a person's parents were born.
Somehow you have a name for her birth mother. That's great - but what is your source?
The family tree says Florence's middle name is Marie.

Here are the John Peterson marriages in Houston county. The Houston county records go back to 1854 at the Minnesota Official Marriages system site. There were no John Pederson, John Petterson:
HOUSTON N-286 10/04/1943 PETERSON, JOHN H TUFTE, RUDA S
HOUSTON W-364 08/19/1972 PETERSON, JOHN ALLEN WAHLMAN, PATRICIA JEAN
HOUSTON K-178 05/09/1928 PETERSON, JOHN KENNETH KUJAWA, EVELYN GRACE
Here are John Petersen. there are no John Pedersen, John Pettersen:
HOUSTON AA-11A 09/15/1858 PETERSEN, JOHN HANSDASSER, METTA KRISTINE
HOUSTON A-119A 12/12/1863 PETERSEN, JOHN OLSDATTER, INGEBORG
HOUSTON Q-503 08/31/1954 PETERSEN, JOHN NICKOLI MILLER, LUCILLE ANN
HOUSTON W-127 08/01/1971 PETERSEN, JOHN ALFRED BRAND, BONNIE JEAN
Lack of record at county level in Houston likely means there is no marriage for John and Anne in Houston, or it would require a down in the weeds page by page search to find an erroneous report or missed record.
