Well, lack of education is the most easily overcome of human shortcomings.

In this case as many others, who are the enculturators in a family? Back in the day, it was your mother. This family was truly disserved by the death of their mother, too early.

Even in my generation, Dad was strictly hands off, what we learned about family was from Mom.

Today's families seem to be different, I see more and more fathers taking an active interest and part in imparting even small things to their kids and that is great.

I received the Burke family info from a relative today. In my grandmother's handwriting - list of places and dates - as she remembered them: "Florence Mary Burke, bd November 21, 1881. (this year is also listed in other documents as 1880). Place of birth Rushford Minn. Father's name John Peterson. BD February 9, 1851. Place of birth Christine Norway. Mother's name Anna Nelson. BD June 1, 1865. Place of birth Coopenngen Denmark. Foster father: John Francis Martin. BD November 26, 1824. Place of birth Vesaul, France. Foster mother: Elizebeth Morrison. Bd: unreadable. Place of birth Homer County, Ohio.

She lists her children's names, date and places of birth in Ridgeway or Rushford. Baptisms include Ridgeway, Rushford and Winona. One stillborn, 1913 buried on the old Burke home in the corner of baleful?? - Burke Farm.

Some typed notes from another relative that say John Peterson was born in Bergen Norway on 1851 to Peter Ole Peterson and Inger K. John's bd matches my grandmother's information but I haven't researched this yet.

This document also shows: "Inner K - 1820 - unknown. Children Peter Christian Peterson 1849 - 1912, Ingeborg Peterson 1853-1901, Paul Christian Peterson 1857-1927, and John Peterson 1851-unknown. Wrong Peter Ole Peterson? See other search results for Peter Ole Peterson."
I will continue to reach out to other relatives for more information.

If Anne Nelson was b Denmark in 1865 and was in Minnesota in 1875, there are only 3 candidates at familysearch:

Anne Neilson b 1862 Denmark living in Red Wing city, Goodhue county, Minnesota

Anne Nelson b 1868 Denmark living in Riceland, Freeborn county, Minnesota

Anne Nielsen b 1862 Denmark living in Tørdenskjold, Otter Tail county, Minnesota

While it might be physically possible someone born in 1868 is an unlikely parent of someone b in 1880 or 1879.

There are 5 children in the Minnesota Births and Christenings database 4 born in Fillmore county to parents John Pederson and Anne:

2 listings for stillborn or unnamed male b 13 Aug 1882:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD9H-JJ6
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDHJ-8Z4

female b. Winona 7 Sept 1900 to John age 29 and Anne age 20 clearly eliminates this one from consideration.

Two listings of Martin and Martin Oscar same birthdate 5 April 1881

Not really. If you search at familysearch, the site is most generous on the various spellings of names. However, it [s]doesn't [/s didn't]equate Florence and Flossie for me then but seems to now....computers are learning from us!

A candidate family from the list provided by BCady of the children of Peter Ole Peterson and Inger K. Need to see if Johan Carl can be matched with John Peterson. This family fits the family provided by BCady but I am not sure it fits the John Petersen born about 1846 and I think the one we are interested in?

I could see the first one being a potential match. Goodhue county is not far from Fillmore, Houston, or Winona County where this family would have been residing. Also, to put this in a broader historical context, we are talking about the westward expansion and although Houston/Fillmore counties are slightly west/southwest, I don't find it unusual that they would have started out in Goodhue Co.

Do we have the faddernes for the known baptisms of John's and Anne' children? Having those names might sort out which family

wo listings of Martin and Martin Oscar same birthdate 5 April 1881
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD9H-8WY
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDHJ-6FX

This is a baptism record. Note the parents are listed as John Pedersen but Anne Johnson.

Name: Martin Oscar Helmer
Baptism Age: 0
Record Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 5 Apr 1881
Baptism Date: 6 Jun 1881
Baptism Place: Peterson, Minnesota, USA
Father: John Pedersen
Mother: Anne Johnsen
Church Name: Highland Prairie Lutheran Church
Church Location: Peterson, Minnesota

Witnesses are Hans Haraldsen, Kristoffer Gulbrandsen, Hilda Hansen

No other children were found in Peterson, Minnesota ELCA records. A child Mina was found in the ELCA records for Whalen, Minnesota a city in Fillmore County. Maybe a child of John's maybe not.

Mina Emelia Pederson
in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1826-1969
Name: Mina Emelia Pederson
Baptism Age: 0
Record Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 9 Apr 1879
Baptism Date: 4 May 1879
Baptism Place: Whalan, Minnesota, USA
Father: John Pederson
Mother: Anne Tiline Pederson
Church Name: First Lutheran
Church Location: Whalen, Minnesota

Witnesses are Hans Olsen, Ole Bakke, Ane Martha Olsen, Maria Olsen

Maybe Mina is of some interest or maybe not. But Ole Bakke is likely the Ole Pedersen Bakke born March 8, 1839 according to a Tree.
Ole Pederson Bakke came to Fillmore County in 1877 and left in 1885 from Chicago.
