I am looking for more information on a boat accident that occured on 21 Jul 1829 in Frierfjorden, Kragero, Telemark. In arkivverket 1829 p. 237, http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?show=121&uid=39164&urnread_imagesize=full&hode=nei&ls=1 Isach Gundersen and one of his three daughters, 8 year old Marthe Helene Isachsdatter were drowned with two other men and the wife of one of the men.
Is it possible that there is more information out there other than the information listed on the death entry for Kragero? Was it a ferry, or some other public conveyance? Were other people on board who were rescued? Drownings of fishermen at sea were a frequent tragedy in this area, but as there was a woman and a child, and possibly other people on board, this is unusual, and may have been reported in some book elsewhere.
I would like to know more about this, if possible: Isach Gundersen was my g-g-g-grandfather, and it is possible that his wife and two other daughters (my g-g-grandmother were on the same boat but survived.
Thanks in advance for any help

Your link does not work. You should have said Bamble, not Kragrø, see this page for the males and this page for the females. |

To K Peterson Your message is noticed. I made a failurein trying to answer you. The Frier fjord is between the Bamble and Porsgrunn townships. Make a search on Google Earth. You may also search for Porsgrunn Historielag (The Historical Society in Porsgrunn ), Or Brevik Historielag by Johnny Sorensen. He is the guy who knows a lot about the history of the life at the fjord of southern Telemark in late 200 years. Regards Ingar Clausen

Thank you so much, Ingar! This is really helpful and I hope that one of those sources has some information to share on this incident. The Sorenson source sounds excellent and just the type of thing needed for other research I have. Regards Kathy Peterson |

Hello again, Ingar -- I wrote to the emails listed on the Brevik Historielag site but none of them worked, and I did try them from several different email addresses (gmail, hotmail and my Apple address), and received the message "permanent failure". Do you happen to know if there were any changes to the website, or if they have new email addresses?
If you don't know of any other email addresses, I will just write a "snail mail" to the address they listed. The Porsgrunn Historielag address works and hopefully they will have some information, too.
Thank you for any help and have a good afternoon! Kathy |
