Hi all,

I am trying to trace our family lines back as far as I can. on my mothers side I have found records to indicate that her great grand parents came to america from norway in 1885, but the ellis island records appear to have been lost in the fire.

all of my best information points to 1885

Henry (Hendrick?) Berg and I have records with 3 different spellings for Carrie

Currie which i believe is a transcription error, Carrie, and Kari Berg
[edit] Carrie's maiden name may have been Eriksdatter?

I am not sure where to look from here and I am not even sure what information to provide to help people help me =).

please let me know if there is any more information i can provide. i will do my best. just need a new direction to go in...I am stumped at the moment.

THANKS!!

more detailed information

Henry Berg (Henrick Andreassen Berg?)
Born: 13 Dec 1854 Moss, Trueter Visby, Norway? I cannot verify the accuracy of this data
Died: 1926 Blooming Prairie, North Dakota?

Spouse: Carrie (Kari) Halvorsen? or Eriksdatter? Berg. I dont know for sure where the Halvorsen is coming from in the records I have found.
Born: 25 Jul 1857 Hol Hallandal, Norway?
Died: 1920 Blooming Prairie, North Dakota?

Children: Inger, Hans, Helga, Clara, Olga, Caspera, Arthur, Tilly?

resided in Rock, Mitchell County, Iowa? do not know of other locations but certainly others are possible.

Information which is excellent to give -
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/good-queries.htm

Ellis Island wasn't opened until 1892. They must have entered through another American port. There are several excellent articles about the various ports that Norwegian arrived at on this website.

dodgeboy12...the date for kari berg looks to match some records I have. I do have records of them in the united states but I am looking for their ancestry further back. I cannot seem to locate any records that i can verify for heritage in norway before they left. thank you for looking and providing more information!

records obtained from my family do show them in mitchell county iowa in the late 1800s and early 1900s. apparently married in 1887 from what we can gather. just having trouble locating any information prior to their coming to america...

hopkins...thank you! I will check that site and see if I can find anything more!

A Henrik Berg born approx 1855 emigrated in 1883, he was a sergant and came from Fredrikstad. See 73508.

Did Henry and Carrie marry in USA?

In the 1865 census there were 8 Kari Eriksdatter born in 1857.

Hi,

If Mitchell County, Iowa is the place you will want to check records at www.usgenweb.com--there are several very significant databases to search there for Mitchell county people.

It is best to arm yourself with as much detail as Henry exhibits in records here to compare to potential Hendrik / Henriks over there, to make certain that you have the correct Henry.

Good Luck,
Jackie

Jon can go to a location that has Ancestry.com available - perhaps a local public library, a LDS Family History Center or even a local genealogical society. Ancestry also makes offers of free trial subscriptions for people to try from time to time.

Jon, to track your Norwegian ancestors as far back as possible you will need to study the basics of Norwegian ancestral research. There are a number of excellent 'how-to' articles online for you to study, among them -
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/articles.html
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wgnorway/

The US information is needed because it gives clues to finding earlier information. The 1900 US census for Henry Berg's family in Mitchell Co. IA listed the oldest child as born in Illinois -- so that would be important.

Henry Berg left from Oslo/Kristiania on or about the 10th of April 1885 and stated his intended destination as Chicago.

thank you all so much for your guidance. this will definitely help me track down the family lines I am looking for. thanks!!

@Jan Peter

that helps a great deal. i did not see that Tilly was listed as a niece but i did note a discrepancy in the number of children (7) vs the number of people listed in the census (10) 2+8....

Hi,

Blooming Prairie could be a lot of places. There is Blooming Prairie a town in Minnesota, Blooming [Prairie] Township in Grand Forks County, North Dakota and I believe there is a Blooming Prairie in Wisconsin, also.

The deathdates could be checked in the North Dakota Public Death Index online. Google will find it if you search for this title.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Ingeborg, her parents and siblings in 1801
