Hi,

Another Blooming Prairie!

Here is Henry Berg /Carrie Halvorson marriage from Illinois State Archives:

BERG, HENRY HALVORSEN, CARRIE 1885-11-25 / 00097996 COOK

There is a webpage wherein there is a list of all the Hol Hallingdal emigrees. The information on the list includes those folks found in the Hol bygdebok who left and those whose permissions are found in the church registers. There are only two Kari Halvorsdatters listed there, one of them is in the following copy from Norwegian Digital Archives of 1865 census:

District no. Page School distr. Local parish Parish Farm Remarks (farm) Title
820 12 243 Nordre Haavet og Sunddalen Hol Aal Halfardokken 442b 1
Pers.no. Household Given name Last name Family pos. Occupation Marital status Age Sex Birth place Cattle Sheep Goat Barley Potatoes

4999 13 1 Vebjørn Helges. Inderst Dagarbeider ug 26 m Aals Prgj.

What the bygdebok says about her is this, Volume V, page 456:
"(IX) 2. Kari Halvorsdtr. f 1/3/1853, i 1875 tente ho i Botne i Vestfold, til Am. i 1881, g. der."

And in the Utflyttedes section page 458:
"Til Am. 3 syskin:
(IX) 1. Kari Halvorsdtr. Halfardokken f. 1853, g i Am., levde i N.Dak. 8 born..."

I'm still looking for a Kari in the 1865 census with a closer birth/baptism to the 1857 Kari baptism already cited.

I'm not sure where she is in the 1865 census. She is not at home with her parents. Could she possibly be in the neighboring parish Gol? The 1865 census for Gol is missing.

Hi,

Sure it's possible that as an 7-9 year old child she was "farmed out" so to speak into another parish. It is also possible she died and either would have to be determined in the Aal church registers and her leaving / entering would be found in the Gol church registers.

I guess I wonder if the original querist could enlighten on the source he has for the Kari Halvorson he cited. Was it the result of personal research or picked up from one of the online family tree databases? No doubt that the baptism record Jan Peter found is for the same Kari Halvorson cited by the querist, but.... There are many possibilities.

The Hol database mentioned earlier has one other Kari Halvorsdatter whose farm name is åkeren, with a birth date of 22 Feb 1846. She would be fairly "long in the teeth" to be still having babies in 1897, but I will look in the Hols book for her.

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

Well... the "Carrie Halvorsen" that jon is looking for is said to be born July 25th 1857 in Hol Hallandal, Norway.

And the daughter Kari Halvorsdatter of Halvor Halvorsen & Birgit Helgesdatter in Hol, Hallingdal is aborn 25 JUL 1857.

Hi Jan,

Agreed a perfect match on date and name.

But it might be a circular argument, self fulfilling prophecy. depending on how the querist or querist's source arrived at her as the match.

To the other Kari b 1846, no trace found. At åkeren in the index to Hols boka there are no Kari of any surname, under åker there are two Karis 1. an Engebretsdatter born 1905 and 2. s Sigurdsdatter born 1914, under åkreslatta there is Kari Olsdtr born 1715 and all the other farms in Hol beginning with åker have no Kari in the index. And no Halvor of any surname under any of these farms mentioned.

Jackie M.

At the confirmation of Kari Halvorsdatter in 1873 she was living at Rudslaateie, see #43.
In 1878 she moved to Sigdal, see #55.

Hi,

Yes the Kari whose baptism Jan cited is most likely the correct one.

Have found the family in the Holsbygdeboker Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume III page 300, under Haugo husmansplass under Rueslaaten. Father Halvor Halvorson b. 10 July 1813 in Nore m. 2 times 1. Gunvor Sveinsdtr b.1821 d. shortly after 1841. 2. Birgit Helgesdatter Helgutøyn b. 1820 d. 1890.

Here's what it says about Kari page 301:
"(III) 5. Kari Halvorsdtr. f 25 /7/1857. Ho og søster Mari tente i 1875 i Nykirke, reiste til Am...."

and on page Utflytte page 303:
"Til Am.
(III) 3. Kari Halvorsdtr Haugo f. 1857. Ho og Mari tente i Nykirke (budeier) Kari i Am. gm ein laerer, visstnok Henrik Berg. Born."

In an abstracted obit for Henry Berg found in the Index and Notes of Deaths Published in Divide County Journal
May 1916-Dec 1929:
by Rodney Gillund

paper date 7 May 1926, Henry Berg of Blooming Valley Township, d. at home in Nansen, ND 30 Apr. Svc at Nanson, svc at Blooming Prairie Church Se of Crosby, beside 1st wife....
b. 13 Dec 1854 Norway...Moved to Illinois in 1855, later moving to Osage, Iowa, came to Blooming Valley Twp in 1911 moved to Nansen in 1920.
m1 Carrie Halvorson in 1885 in Evanston, Illinois, had 10 children 8 of whom survive. Carrie died 27 May 1920
m2 Mrs. Gilbert who survives.
surviving children:
Mrs. George Chinn,
Mrs. William Fox,
Hans
who all live in Iowa
Mrs. Julius Kamprud
Mrs. Anton Stenerson
Mrs. Othard Stenerson,
George
Arthur
all in Crosby area.
Deceased children: Mrs. Inga Krogstad, Cora Berg

And just roughly looking in Holsboka there will be many generations to find in Hol environs.

Hi,

According to Lars Reinton in Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume VI, page 63-65, year 1786 Mari Ellingsdatter:

born 1786 the 3rd of 6th children of Elling Larsen n Grovo, Tufto born 1757 bapt 5 Feb 1758 and his first wife Birgit Tolleivsdtr, the fosterdaughter of Ole Olson Villand, Tufto and Mari Henriksdatter. Birgit died about 1794. Elling went on with two other wives and an additional 3 children with wife #3. Elling died 1811.

Mari would have been the aunt of my 3great grandmother Guro Olsdatter b 1820 d. 1898.

Re he original post on Henry Berg. In the Rowberg Bio File on fiche 118 there is an obit for him which had been published in Skandinaven 16 June 1926, written by L Sørensen. It mentions that Henry was a religion school teacher in two areas in North Dakota and that Henry served in the Norwegian army abt 1875 (so 1855 leaving in the other abstract is a typo) and that he was born in Moss, Norway as Henry Andreasen Berg on 13 Dec 1854. There appeared to be no obit in Rowberg for Carrie Berg.

Elling Larson's parents were Lars Olson søre Villand b. 1731 d. 1797 and Gro Tomasdtr Røo b. abt 1735 d. 1773.

Gro Tomasdtr's parents are found in Volume VI of Folk og Fortid i Hol on Røo, page 198 year 1723 as Tomas Asleson Røo b. abt 1690 estate filing after him on 17 Oct 1765 and Rangdi Knutsdtr Gjuvjorde from Votndal in Aal no birth date given but estate filing after her dated 17 Oct 1765.

Tomas Asleson's parents are also in Volume VI, under Røo on page 197, year 1713 as Asle Tomasson nordre Hove from Aal b. abt 1670 estate filing date for him as 20 Feb 1715 and his 2nd wife Birgit Knutsdtr Røo b abt 1675. Tomas was the first of 2 known children of the couple.

Birgit Knutsdtr's parents are also found in Volume VI, under Røo, page 195, year abt 1666 as Knut Sanderson Røo b 1632 estate filing after him on 6 July 1711 and his 1st wife, Birgit Jonsdtr søre Kaupang d. 1692. Birgit was the first child of 5 known of her parents. Knut later married a woman named Mari Asgrimsdtr søre Rue

Knut Sanderson was the first of 6 children, and the first boy, born to his parents who are named in Volume VI, also under Røo page 193, year 1638 as Sander Sanderson Røo II b 1604 d after 1677 and his wife Kari Guttormsdtr b abt 1605 d. 4 Apr 1704 (and estate filing after them 16 Oct 1702).

Sander was the second of three known sons of his parents also found in Vol VI, under Røo, page 191 from 1638 as Sander Sanderson b abt 1550 in Scotland and his wife Ragnhild Asgautsdtr b. Norway. Sander sr was a very interesting character. His name or his occupation was thought to be Taylor / a tailor and he was asked to write many documents in the valley since he was skilled as a penman.

Mari was baptized the second Sunday in Advent (Dec 10) 1786, see lower part of left page.

Ellings father was Lars Olsen Grovo, see last record on right page.

Hi,

Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume IV, søre Villand, year 1728, page 262-265 is where Lars Olson n Grøvo, siblings and parents are mentioned:

Lars was the 3rd of 4 sons born to Ola Larson Fossgard, søre Villand b. 1694 d. 1753 and Ragnhild Ellingsdtr. Villand b. 1692 d. 1752. Ola Larson was Ragnhild's second husband, her first was Ola Tolleivson Uppsata (so-called "Blank Ola") with whom she had 4 children.

Lars' siblings were
Ola Olson Villand b. May 1729 and married Mari Henriksdtr Dehlen b. 1732. Ola had the farm Tufto and he and Mari were the fosterparents of Birgit Tolleivsdtr who married Elling Larson

Svein Olson Villand born 1733 d. "fredlaus" and married Anne Torjusdtr Sato from Aal. The book gives the year of marriage as 1864, an obvious typo for prob. 1764.

Knut Olson Villand b. 1741 m 1769 Aagot Guttormsdtr øvre Larsgard b. 1741. Knut bought Annfinnset and lived there.

Ragnhild Ellingsdtr was the oldest of 3 girls born to Elling Nilson b. abt. 1655 d. 1720 & Aase Sveinsdtr Brattaker b abt. 1675 d. after 1738. Ragnhild was born the year her father came to Kolve a farm in Voss so it is at least possible that she was born in Voss. The mother Aase m2 Paal Isackson nedre Skøro.

In Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume VII under Fossgard, page 203 year 1710 is found reference to Ola Larson Fossgard who married Ragnhild Ellingsdtr. mentioned above:

Ola Larson was the 2nd of three known children born to parents Lars Knutson nordre Uthus, Fossgard b. abt 1670 d. before 1740 and his first wife Turi Aslesdtr Strand from Aal after whom there was an estate filing in 1711. Later Lars married Aase Olsdtr Brattåker.Asle Larson, Ola's older brother, married the sister of Ragnhild named Sigrid Ellingsdtr

In this same volume, also under Fossgard, on page 202 year 1700, the parents and siblings of Lars Olson are named.

Lars was the oldest of 8 children born to Knut Olson Uthus, Fossgard after whom estate was filed 16 Jun 1709 and his wife Birgit Larsdtr who married a second time to the Breiehagen farm in Aal and after whom an estate filing was made on 12 Oct 1724.

Hi,

Carrying out another of the Hol lines.

Ola Helgeson who married Guri Gjermundsdtr is found with his other siblings and parents in Folk og Fortid i Hol, Volume VI, page 350, year 1766 under Kaupangplassen.

In this book, Ola's birthyear is given as 1766. It lists the 1763 Ola Helgeson as having died on Mehus in 1764. The 1766 Ola is listed as the 2nd of four sons of his parents who are named as Helge Hallsteinson Mehus, søre Årset b.1733 married 1763 to Birgit Olsdtr Tangen b. 1740 from Ål. Birgit died 26 Oct 1822.

Helge Hallsteinson's parents are found also in Volume 6, søre Årset, page 85, year 1746 as:

Hallstein Olson Mehus, Isungset, søre Årset b. 1695 d. 1758 and Turid Endresdtr. søre Pukerud d. 1759 ( estate settled 23 June 1759)

Helge Hallsteinson is the second of 6 siblings born to his parents.

Hallstein Olson's parents are found also in this volume, page 246-248, year 1698 on Mehus, as Ola Hallsteinson Mehus b abt 1660 estate settlement after him 13 Sept 1735 and Ola's first wife Liv Olsdtr on whom the estate settlement was dated 11 Nov 1720. Hallstein the first boy and the second child in the family, was born about 1695.

Ola Hallsteinson's parents are also in the volume, page 246, year 1662, Mehus as Hallstein Gulbrandson b. abt 1624 (birth year calculated from his age given in the manntal/census as 40) and his first wife Magnhild Aslesdtr, thought to be from Sand who died before 1698.

Turid Endresdtr Pukerud b abt 1715 to Endre Knutson Hamarsbøen b. abt 1670 and Ingeborg Jonsdtr Pukerud b about 1685. This is found on pages 779-780 Volume VI of Folk or Fortid as well as the information that Endre's father was named Knut Vebjørnson Hammarsbøen.

Magnhild Aslesdtr is named as the 2nd of 3 daughters of Asle Nilson Sand who was born about 1593. Asle's birthdate was calculated from his age of 71 years given in the manntal from 1664. Asle's father is listed as Nils Halvorson Kleppo b abt 1550. This information is found under Sand farm, abt abt 1580, page 222,1615, page 222, year abt 1625 page 223.
