Hi

My cousin and I have two different birth places for our great-grandfather Svend Terjeson's family.
For Svend I show Øyestad Aust-Agder Norway and he shows Omholt Songend Norway.

We both show his son Terje born in Øyestad.

For Cathrine Larsdatter I show Fjaere Aust-Agder Norway and he show Lunne Eje Norway
I know there are farm names that come into play - I have an Øyestad Bygdebak but I do not undertand it.
Can you help me with what would be the village, county and farm names?
Thank you so much.
Ellen

I wonder if your Svend Terjeson and Cathrine Larsdatter are not the same as the Svend Terjeson and Cathrine Larsdatter discussed on this Forum back in 2007. Here is the reply from eibache during that discussion.

Terje Svendsen 6 month old son of Svend Tergesen was born April 14 1849 in Øiestad but christened June 10 in Froland. See NB
This Svend Terjesens wife was Cathrine Larsdatter – they married Nov 24 1848 in Øiestad, see 32
He was born and lived at Omholt Saugenæs and his father was Terje Knudsen.
If Kari was the sister of Svend Tergesen born Dec 30 1823, christened Feb 8 1824 Mykland, Aust-Agder whos parents were Terje Næresen and Anne Evensdatter, she would not be the aunt of Terje Svendsen born in 1848

And here is the link. See page 2 midway down.

Your cousin would definitely want to have the parish name with their records, since the same farm name can be found in many areas in Norway. You would need both. Just like our street, city and state address. It's incomplete if you just list the state. Combining what you have, would help you both. I find it interesting that you only wrote down the parish and your cousin the farm name. :-)

Hi lyndal40

Thank you for your quick response.
I have seen the posting that you mention. I am very confused as to names of towns, parrishes, districts, counties and farms.
Is Omholt Saugenæs a town and county or a parish or a farm or a ?
In regards to Svend I have part of the Øyestad Bygdebek (Bind 2). From the letter attached it seems the farm name was Sageneset - part of the Lille Omholt. What is a Lille?

In some places (ancestry family trees for one) it shows that Svend was born in Øyestad Aust-Agdar. Would this be the town and county?
I am trying to get this correct for our geneolgy records.

I am not sure about your reference to Kari - parents names do not match.

Thanks again for any help

Ellen

Hi,
I think you are both right...
Fjære was a parish in Aust-Agder county, and are now a part of Grimstad municipality in Aust-Agder county.
Lunne Eje would be "Lunde Eje" or Lundeeie. And Lunde is a farm in Fjære, ie. in Grimstad.... :)
When the farmname end with "eie", it means a small farm under the main farm. Lunde would be the main farm, and Lunde-eie would be a small holding next to Lunde.

So I think you can say that Cathrine Larsdatter was from Lunde-eie farm in Fjære parish, Aust-Agder county.

Thanky you so much

Just to confirm that I understand - then Svend would be from Omholt-Sageneset farm in Øyestad Aust-Agder.

Please confirm

And again thank you so much

You are really amazing.

The baptismal record for Svend (Sven) is #23. His parents were living at Omholt Saugene (in the 1865 census the farm name name is Omholt Saugenæss.

So Svend was born at the farm (place) Saugenæss under the Omholt farm in Øyestad, Aust-Agder, Norway.

The baptismal record for Cathrine is #20. Her parents were living at Lundeeie.

So Cathrine was born at a place under the farm Lunde in Fjære, Aust-agder, Norway.

1) Sageneset farm
2) Lille Omholt farm
3) Store Omholt farm
4) Øyestad church
5) Lunde farm. Lunde-eie should be next to it, and could have been within the red circle.

Fjære is the area from Lunde farm heading west. Øyestad is the area from the church heading east towards downtown Arendal, including the area up to Omholt and Sageneset etc.
These boarders have changed a lot throughout the history. Everything from Øyestad church and eastwards are now under Arendal municipality, while the area west of the church belongs to Grimstad. The border is the purple line which for a part goes through the river just below the church.
