Hello,
I've been searching for awhile now about my fiancé's family in Brooklyn New York. Her Great Grandparents both immigrated from Norway to New York somtime around 1890s-1900. Both were unmarried at the time.

Peter Petersen was born 21 Mar 1875 in Norway. I have no clue where to find out what town he was from. I've checked naturlization papers & could not find him anywhere. He was living in Brooklyn from 1898 to at least 1940. I cannot find where or when he died either.
I need to find out what his parents names were also & any/all info about him.

His wife, who he married on 24 May 1902 in Brooklyn, was - Hansine Hansen. Another one that I cannot find anything on.
She was born in 1883 & died in 1935.

Together they had 6 children - Lydia, Joseph, James, Clarence, Hazel & Lois.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I do have some photos of both of them but unfortunatly, that is the most info anyone in the family has about them. My fiance's father passed away many years ago & she never had the opportunity to discuss family history with him. She was only 14 when he died.

Thank you very much in advance.

Perhaps a starting point is what is readily avaliable about him especially on Ancestry.com. Here is the 1910 US Census and since he has a wife named Hansine I will assume it is the right Peter Petersen. It shows he immigrated in 1893. It also shows a brother Abraham who immigrated in 1901 and was born abt. 1881. It also shows that Hansine immigrated in 1900 so I assume they were married in the US.

Name: Peter Petersen
Age in 1910: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1875
Birthplace: Norway
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Norway
Mother's Birth Place: Norway
Spouse's name: Hansine
Home in 1910: Brooklyn Ward 9, Kings, New York
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1893
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Peter Petersen 35
Hansine Petersen 28
Joseph Petersen 7
Lydia Petersen 5
James C Petersen 4
Clarence O Petersen 2
Hazel P Petersen 1
Abraham N Petersen 29

Hi,

If you think both great grandparents were here in 1900, the US Federal census from that year would be a great resource to get year and month of birth, which might be especially helpful for Hansine. 1900 census and some of the other later years might also contain information about their year of migration and national status, if alien, or if they have filed papers to become citizens or if they have naturalized.

There might be a death certificate available for Hansine (and likewise Peter), if you check in the databases at the Italian Genealogical Group's website. On a modern death certificate, birthdate information and even their parents' names might be included. If the certificate gives burial information, it might be worth checking with the sexton of the cemetery to see if Peter is buried with her there. You live with them in life, and often you are buried next to them in death.

If they were members of a local church, the church registers might also contain information on their origins in Norway, particularly if the church was a Norwegian Lutheran church. Checking the godparents listed for each of their children's baptism would likely uncover family or friends who might know more about their origins in Norway.

An obituary for either Hansine or Peter might contain information about places of origin in Norway, or siblings or parents who might have survived or come to America also. This would be especially true if there were a Norwegian language newspaper in their area.

If there was a Sons of Norway chapter in their neighborhood in Brooklyn, you might want to check to see if they were members there.

My next opportunity, I will check the Rowberg file for an obit for Peter Petersen / Peterson. There were a couple of Norwegian language newspapers which acted as "billboards" for the immigrants and had readership across the US. Rowberg clipped obits from numerous newspapers from across the US so it is at least possible that there might be an obit for your family.

Good Luck,

Jackie M.

Hi,

Since you have Ancestry available you might want to check in the WWI Draft Registration cards for both Peter and Abraham. Sometimes a more complete place of origin is given than just a country name.

John, there is a Family Tree on Ancestry.com that seems to fit this family with quite a bit of information. Does this tree belong to you.

Photos of Hansine and the Petersen family.

Kristine Hansines baptismal record is #27. She was born out of wedlock. Her mother was Hansine Kristine Hansen married to Hans Ingvard Hansen (who for 4 years had been in Amerika). Kristine Hansines father was sailor Gotfred Hansen.

The baptismal record for Kristine Hansines father is most likely #34 - he was born July 15 1853 and his parents were sailor Hans Gundersen, Helgeroa and Hanne Marie Hansdatter.

The baptismal record for Kristine Hansines mother is most likely #24. She was born Dec 7 1849 and her parents were Hans Aasholt (or Aaswolsen) and Kirsten Margretha, née Berg.

John, not to be nit picky about your Family Tree at Ancestry.com but you have the father of Peter Petersen listed as Hans Ingvard Hansen whereas he is the father of Peter's wife Kristine Hansine Hansen.

Also I noticed that you have a immigration record for Hansine Kristine Hansen but from 1908. I assume that she travelled back and forth to Norway after her initial immigration in 1900? Interesting in light of what Einar posted that she listed in the orginal manifest her father as G. Hansen of Horten.

Name: Hansine Hansen
Arrival Date: 19 Nov 1908
Birth Year: abt 1883
Birth Location: Norway
Birth Location Other: horten
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Scandinavian
Port of Departure: Christiania
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Oscar II
