I am looking for ancestors in US that I’m not aware of. I have an uncle living in US that I know of and have contact with, this people I’m looking for is his grand uncle and grad aunt. My great great grandfather had at least 6 children and at least two of them ended up in US. Some other of them visited US once or more times.
I am pretty sure that one of his sons Eivind Ferdinand Randby went to live in US and got married and had children. He was born 1866 in Kristiania (now Oslo). After some family pictures I think he (only the names of the children are on the pictures so I assume that this is Einar) had at least two sons Einar Walter Chester (Randby) and Harald (Randby) the photographs are taken in Boston Mass. one dated December 1912. It looks like the two brothers were in the army and I think Harald ended up in the navy and Einar as a rifleman and served in France after a picture where there is written (debarkaline comp)? Bordeaux. It also is written on the back side of another picture of him in uniform 1185-3 comp? What makes it a little more tricky is that another picture shoves a girl and on the back side its sign Einar and this picture is taken in Pittsburg. There is no girl on the family picture taken in 1912 and the photo is obvious newer than the one with the girl on.
The other ancestor is Susi Anna Kristine Randby, she got married but after what I’m told she got no children. She was born 1873 in Hammerfest (north of Norway) were her father my grand grand father served as a custom clerk for a period before he moved to Kristiania and Drammen. I was mistaken her, she did not emigrate to US.
My great great grandfather’s name was Han Jacob Jacobsen Randby born 1839 in Ullensaker about 35 kilometers north of Oslo and his wife’s name was Martha Marie Randby (b. Henriksen).
If somebody could help I will be grateful.

Hi,
I'm probably doing this a little backwards, but I found a Einar Randby in New York in the 1930 census, along with two brothers.
1930 US Census - Bronx, New York Randby, Reider - Head, 29 years, rents, married at age 28, born Norway, immig. 1923, laborer, boat shop. Randby, Mona, wife, 39 yrs, married at 38, born Norway, immig 1929. Randby, Trydbe(?), brother, 25 yrs, single, born Norway, immig 1923, laborer, factory. Randby, Einar, brother, 20 yrs, single, born Norway, immig 1928, upholster, factory.
I will look for more later.
Good luck! |

The 1910 US census shows a 43 year old "Edwin F. Randby" living in Allegheny County of Pennsylvania. He is married to a woman named Lillie who was born in the state of Virginia. They have 4 children, Edna (17 yr old daughter), Ida (15 yr old daughter), Roland (10 yr old son), and Howard (8 yr old son). Edwin lists his occupation as artist and he lists that he immigrated to the States in 1888 and has started the papers to become a US citizen. By 1920 "Lillian Randby" (born Virginia) is still living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and she lists herself as divorced. |

So it looks like the family I found is not related, or if so, not the family that you were looking for.
In the 1930 Census, Roland E. Randby is living in Philadelphia. He's 30 years old, widowed and working as a clerk for the railroad.

I think Edwin F. Randby was a famous artist. You may already know this.
Here's something I found.
Name: Randby, Edwin F. Birth - Death: 20th Cent.- Source Citation:
* Who Was Who in American Art. 400 years of artists in America. Second edition. Three volumes. Edited by Peter Hastings Falk. Madison, CT: Sound View Press, 1999. (WhAmArt 2)

Thank you all for your help.
I think the best is to follow Edwind F. Randby since the birth year seems to be the same as Eivind Ferdinand Randby. The pictuere I’ve have of the small girl indicates that Eivind had at least one daughter something that also matches with Edwind F. Randby ho had two. It is also interesting that he was an artist. If he is my grand grandfather’s brother they obviously had the same talent. My father still have quite many oil paintings made by my grand grandfather, and he after working as an photographer for nearly 30 years moved to Germany to paint and stayed there for some 28 years before he came back after ww2 without anything more than what he was wearing.
Do anyone know what the F in Edwind F. Randbys name is. If this is Ferdinad there is most likely that this is Eivind. Or is this a to hast conclusion to draw?
The big question is then, ho is the family that I have pictures of with the two sons Einar Walter Chester and Harald, well that I have to find out I know that my grand grandmother had siblings’ so maybe they are related to that branch of the family tree. I’ll have to research that later.
In the process I found out that my grand aunt (my father’s aunt) moved to US and died there. She had no children. She was living together whit a Swedish man, maybe with the name Svendson and he was maybe a journalist. She was born in Drammen in 1900 and her name was Gudlaug Kjøsterud Randby. I find her on passenger list leaving from Southampton to New York in 1932. She had a nick name Gina.
It also shows that my information on the daughter Susi was wrong. She did not emigrate to US. So I deeply regret that I did post this request without doing proper research. Sorry for your trouble.
The Norwegian digitalarkivet and other sources here in Norway gives me pretty god information on their births and were they were living in Norway. But I struggle when they go out of Norway. This is probably natural since I am quite new to this kind of research and of coerce the languish is more troublesome. Thanks to word and spelling programs, this text hopefully is readable for you. I still will be grateful for any help on my search for my grand grandfather’s siblings in US and Australia and Singapore (posted under mariners on this forum).
Happy xmas to you all. Lars
